Veselka Expansion Back On, Liquor License or Not

8/4/08 at 2:15 PM

Veselka’s expansion plans are back on after a community-board related delay, Eater reports. After being denied a liquor license in February, work on the new Avalon Bowery complex on East 1st Street halted. Owner Jason Birchard tells us that he is confident of getting a liquor license, but if not, “we’ll go for a beer and wine license.” The restaurant, to be called Veselka Bowery, will open in summer of next year and have the same ethnic-oriented menu as the current Veselka, with a few flourishes still in the planning stages. Work continues on expanding the original Veselka into an adjacent storefront on 9th Street, as Grub Street reported back in February. Birchard won't give a date for that expansion though, saying only that “it's going to take a while.”
