Only in New York, Kids: Spanish Wine Bars Without Wine

9/19/08 at 9:00 AM

Maybe Bourdain was right when he said New York would never match Spain. After all, Spanish taperías aren’t stuck serving virgin sangria! After opening in July, Bar Carrera’s Houston Street location still hasn’t been granted a liquor license. Not that we have a problem bringing our own (there’s a liquor store on La Guardia between Bleecker and West 3rd) but what’s the holdup? Frederick Twomey’s establishments are pretty chill — except for that one time when a guy tried to light everyone on fire at Bar Veloce. We entreat you, State Liquor Authority: Do like you finally, finally did with Socarrat, and let the Cava flow!
