$1,000 Paella Will Also Be Served at Sofrito’s New Place, Sazon
10/28/08 at 4:30 PM
Genaro “JR” Morales, owner of Sofrito, gave us a ring today to tell us a bit about Sazon, the lunch and dinner spot he plans to open mid-January in the former Fresh space. It’ll be a bi-level affair (downstairs lounge, upstairs restaurant) with a Latin-Caribbean design and menu similar to those of Sofrito. One of the dishes Sofrito’s exec chef Ricardo Cardona will carry over to the new place: the infamous $1,000 paella. So far, Morales has sold the beast to two parties, a Manhattan woman (plus three dining companions) and a Jersey guy (plus four) — he says he’s hoping to write a check to Ayuda, which gets 20 percent of proceeds, at the end of the month. He was not able to get Héctor Camacho and Stephon Marbury to go for it when they dropped in this weekend.
