Panya Closing Is a Blow to Sunrise Mart

The repercussions of East Village bakery Panya’s upcoming closing will be felt all the way to Soho at the company’s other venture, Sunrise Mart. The Japanese grocery store tells us that after January 18, neither location (one above Panya, and one on Broome) will stock Panya baked goods like cream-filled pastries, green-tea cookies, and multigrain croissants or savory oddities like fist-size pigs-in-blankets and sweet corn-filled rolls. The owners are looking for a factory location to continue making Panya’s recipes, but until then the closest shop for sweet buns is Fay Da Chinese Bakery on Canal at Greene Street. The East Village has more options for snack seekers: Saint’s Alp Teahouse and Momofuku Milk Bar have strawberry milk, and Café Zaiya on Third Avenue south of St. Marks carries Japanese breads. Panya’s replacement isn’t confirmed, but a Sunrise Mart rep tells us to expect a Japanese fast-food restaurant in the space in a few months.
