We’ve torn through many a bagel on Russ & Daughters’ bench (hence the salmon roe and caviar cream cheese you might sometimes find smeared on the sidewalk — sorry!), so it was with great interest that we read an account on the store’s blog, Lox Populi, about how the thing went missing. Unlike the mystery of Dirt Candy’s menu box, this one was quickly solved — turns out a leashed dog took off with it. Though the bench weighed 70 pounds, the 25-pound mutt managed to drag it to the end of the block, where the bench was hit by a livery cab (the dog emerged unscathed). The store is currently looking for a replacement. May we suggest something heated? Devouring those bagels during the winter has been brutal.
