Local Produce Not Always Carbon-Friendly; Scores East to File for Bankruptcy?

• Locavores concerned with “food miles” — how far food travels before it is sold — need to consider that the transportation of local produce is not always more carbon-friendly than that of produce found at the supermarket. [Salon]

• Florent Morellet is excited for his diner to close and to move on to the next stage of his life, but he is mum on details for what will replace the meatpacking-district institution: “Something interesting is going on. I can’t tell you.” [Gothamist]

1OAK Owners Deny Accusations of Covering Up Hate Crime

1OAK, the almost-meatpacking lounge that revels in pistol imagery, is feeling some heat on the blogosphere — on Monday, Down by the Hipster reported the club was raided, and, although that seems to have been misinformation (denials were issued to both us and to DBTH), Gawker is now reporting on an actual incident that occurred there around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday. An eyewitness tells the site that two individuals were attacked by a man who used a homophobic slur. One of the victims ended up needing stitches after being rushed to the hospital, and yet the eyewitness claims that 1OAK owners Scott Sartiano and Richie Akiva told him not to call 911 or take an ambulance. A 1OAK rep denied that version of events to us and sent the following official statement:

Bar Martignetti Sponsors the Arts; 1 Oak Invades Canada

spam
In what has to be the weirdest nightlife branching out since the Beatrice guys hit Atlantic City, the team from 1 Oak is headed to Montreal to celebrate the F1 Grand Prix at the Time Supperclub, and they want you to join them! Will Montreal become the new Hamptons (or will the Grand Prix become the new Sundance?) for nightlifers putting their stamp on things? Or are Richie Akiva & Co. just using this as an excuse to storm the city’s notorious strip clubs (they do like them some Scores, after all)? Either way, between this and 1 Oak rival Bar Martignetti sponsoring an art party last night with Guest of a Guest, it’s clear that clubs and restaurants have truly become roving entities. It’s only a matter of time before Rose Bar joins Bono on a tour of Africa.

Richie Akiva Isn’t Feeling Anthony Martignetti's ‘Butter Substitute’

Earlier, we brought news (via Guest of a Guest) that Bar Martignetti was courting celebs via a Monday-night I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter party. Now Butter owner Richie Akiva is telling "Page Six," "All Butter-alternative products should remain on the shelf." Anthony Martignetti counters with, "Our party is a lot more fun." Oh, no he didn’t! Is it just us, or does this feud seem even more manufactured than the last one Akiva got himself into?

A First Look at Eden and Opera, Opening June 3

Eden

Heavenly.Photo: Melissa Hom

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and what better way to ring it in than with — oh, yes — another rooftop bar? Here you have images from last night's opening party at Eden, the open-air boite atop Opera (formerly known as China Club). Owner Danny Freed tells us that the guys from 1Oak may still have a hand in the place, though their rep previously told us otherwise. Either way, feast your eyes on the spot, and maybe hit it up soon (it will be open next Thursday and then from Tuesdays through Saturdays starting June 3). When we see you on Tuesday let’s hope we’re all a shade more tan, a little fatter, and a couple of winks better rested.

Prime Upstages 1 Oak by Offering Lindsay Lohan $11K

John “JE” Englebert has always had one of the most ham-handed PR strategies in clubland — the self-appointed “nightlife lord” once asked us to broadcast the fact that Flavor Flav didn’t show up to host a party at one of his clubs. But this, via Gawker, really takes the cake: In a ploy to ride the publicity coattails of 1 Oak, where Lindsay Lohan is said to have taken someone else’s fur coat, he’s offering to take LiLo on a $11,000 shopping spree. This is a little bit Pretty Woman if you ask us, but while we’re talking about JE, we should probably let you know his West 28th Street club Retox has been renamed Prime. Oh, look, the publicity gambit worked.

Eden Opens This Thursday, Without 1 Oak Team

According to Steve Lewis’s blog, the guys from 1 Oak won’t be doing the rooftop at Opera (formerly China Club) as he previously reported. A rep tells us there was a conversation, but never a contract, and that Richie Akiva et al aren’t currently looking for other rooftops, although Uncle Steve seems to have heard differently. Either way, Eden opens this Thursday at 5 p.m., with an hour of free vodka if you RSVP to val@joonbug.com. An excuse to cut out of work early if ever we heard one.

The Vongerichtification of the China Club was a long time coming, and today Steve Lewis reveals that none other than the team from 1 Oak will be behind the indoor-outdoor rooftop named Eden. (The interview says it opens tonight, May 15, but the club tells us more like next week.) It’ll cater to the “chic elite” (as opposed to the shabby elite) and is “designed for bottle service.” As for the rest of the club, it’s a little confusing — the names Crest, Opera, and Opera at the Crest are bandied about to refer to the independently run lounges within the club (there will also be live shows), but somehow we’re guessing Eden is the name that will end up on people’s lips.

Tenjune Doorman Aalex Julian Nixes Kevin Connolly's Entourage

This weekend, meatpacking club Tenjune will be an after-party spot for movies being shown at the Tribeca Film Festival. One person who knows to expect guests like Mariah Carey, John Cusack, and Hilary Duff is doorman Aalex Julian. Over the course of a few years, he worked the doors at Cain, Pink Elephant, Home, and Guest House before being brought on by Eugene Remm and Mark Birnbaum to open Tenjune. He tells us he’s one of maybe four doormen in the city who are in a position to negotiate their compensation (he gets a shift pay per night in addition to a percentage of table revenue) — part of the reason he’s now been manning the club’s doors for nearly two years.

Board Denies 1 Oak Plaintiff, Smiles on Kafana and Frank's

At a meeting of CB3's State Liquor Authority and Economic Development committee last night, Emilio Barletta, plaintiff in the $120 million lawsuit against 1 Oak, had his wine-license application recommended for denial. Barletta is planning a self-titled trattoria at 32 St. Marks Place that will offer a main course, salad, and two glasses of wine, all for less than $10; however, the board didn't think cheap grub was reason enough to recommend a license in an area that is already "flooded" with bars and Italian restaurants.

This week’s juiciest bit of celeb-sighting gossip was, of course, the Post’s report that after a performer dumped a drink on Demi and Ashton, Box honcho Simon Hammerstein sent an e-mail to his partner and a GM saying, “I can’t stand those two” — apparently because they’re “so far up their own arses” and “don’t spend anything” — “and I applaud whoever spilt a drink on them.” We’re thinking Kid Rock got kinder treatment when he went to Southern Hospitality, or there would’ve been a Tommy Lee–style throwdown.

1 Oak Open for New Year's Eve, Femme Fatale Will Try Again Next Year

A hearty congrats to 1 Oak on its New Year’s Eve invite — we’re not sure whether the two pistols are an homage to Guns N’ Roses or whether they’re to say that the bouncers will be packing à la Opus 22, but whatever. One boîte that won’t be open for New Year's as hoped is Emma Cleary’s Femme Fatale. Cleary had her Christmas party at Jur et Nuit in midtown, so we’re thinking it’s going to be a while till champers flows again in the old Double Happiness space. Until then, we welcome the tourists and their outdated guidebooks.

1 Oak Open Till 4 A.M., But Not Till January

1 Oak

They're already lining up.Photo: Melissa Hom

Down by the Hipster suspects 1 Oak may be opening tonight. We’ve heard whispers of the same, but official word is that it now won’t be fully open to the public until the end of the private-party season. So, January. Last night, a note on the door said that a toy drive slated to be there had been moved to Home. But here's the good news: A victory at last week’s decisive community-board meeting means 1 Oak can operate till 4 a.m. The NIMBY contingent was somewhat mollified when the CB said 1 Oak could not seek a cabaret license. In the meantime, if any lucky bastards are having their company party there, let us know how she looks!

1 Oak + 1 Model = 2 Much Fun!

Model invite

Model mania.

We’ve just gotten our hands on this invite from 1 Model Management for their holiday party at the one and only 1 Oak. Looks like the “restaurant/lounge,” as it’s billed on the invite, will indeed be up and running as soon as next Friday, despite all the storm and stress, and what better way for the beleaguered owners to celebrate than with models and bottles? Space is extremely limited, so Emilio Barletta, the guy who thinks he owns the place, probably won’t be getting in that night.

SLA Tells PM to Take the Month Off

Down by the Hipster brings news that the State Liquor Authority will suspend PM’s liquor license for 30 days in January owing to a history of underage drinking, disorderly conduct, physical altercations, and yadda yadda. We’re not sure how this will affect Kyky and Unik’s plan to do something in the Sascha space (assuming they still have a claim on it), but it should make them even more eager to get their hands on 1 OAK (assuming they are indeed partnering with Emilio Barletta, the restaurateur who is suing for the space). We just called Kyky, and he says he knows nothing about the ruling, despite the documentation on DBTH — a shout-out to that site for being ahead of the curve?

Le Royale Might Just Bring Nightlife Out of the Doldrums

Le Royale

Will a trio of hipster D.J.'s spawn from this new site?Courtesy Le Royale

The Times was extremely dour about the state of NYC nightlife in Sunday’s profile of 1 OAK, but there’s hope after all! David Baxley, the owner of fondly remembered house-music club CentroFly is teaming up with Brit D.J.-producer Terrey Casey to open Le Royale this Friday in what used to be Luke & Leroy. That space, we’ll remind you, is equipped with a precious cabaret license, and who better to put it to use than music directors GBH, the team that brings top-tier rock and electronic talents — like their current resident D.J., Moby — to Hiro’s weekly Cheeky Bastard party. Alejandro Torio of GBH says that in addition to live music acts five nights a week, the weekly Robot Rock party (previous at nearby, now-defunct Movida) will be revived on Thursdays. So what will the door policy be? “If you like rock or electronic music,” Torio tells us, “you’re welcome to come in. It’s not about how much money you have in your pocket.” Now that sounds egalitarian!

Richie Akiva and Scott Sartiano War With ‘Jealous Competitors’ Kyky and Unik of PM

Last week the Daily News brought word that Richie Akiva and Scott Sartiano are being sued for $120 million by developer Emilio Barletta, who claims he’s the rightful lease holder of the space that houses the Butter boys’ club 1 OAK. What the News doesn’t mention, but our inside sources do, is that Barletta, owner of Zanzibar, was planning to partner in the space with PM owners Kyky and Unik, last seen plotting a now-abandoned Italian bistro in the Sascha space.

1OAK and Touch Delayed, Clubland Remains Dormant

A rendering of Touch (plumbing problems not pictured).Courtesy of Touch.

Community Board 4’s licensing committee met last night to again consider the curious case of the Butter boys’ new project 1OAK. The nitty-gritty on this one: The club’s space is licensed by the SLA to hold a piano bar (probably the plans of a previous tenant); Sartiano and Akiva have now submitted an alteration request reflecting their new plan for a restaurant. The request was met with a 4-4 deadlock that will be mulled over by full community board on December 5 — meaning the club won’t be opening quite as soon as we had hoped.

Richie Akiva, owner of celebrity favorite Butter, tells us that he and his partner Scott Sartiano’s next project 1OAK is set to open at 453 West 17th Street on October 19. He won’t tell us much more: “I really want it to be a surprise. It’s going to change the face of nightlife in New York.” He’s also working on opening clubs in Los Angeles and Miami (the latter, we can report, will be an outpost of Butter).
