Andrew W.K. Experiences Déjà Chew at Big Nick’s

We’ve already heard Santos Party House referred to as “the new Sway” (that’s even better than being “the new Lit”!). The owners have been keeping a low profile, but our own Amos Barshad managed to sit down with Andrew W.K. Somehow Amos resisted asking about rumors we’ve heard — that A.W.K. is working on a revolutionary summer eggnog drink!!! — but got an earful about the party-hardy musician’s decade plus in New York City.

Santos' Party House Opens Upstairs Space

Last night, a couple of weeks after its downstairs opened, Andrew W.K.’s club Santos’ (a.k.a. Santa’s) Party House christened its upstairs space with a dance-tacular Body and Soul party. After sweating it out, we can say that Manhattan hipsters tired of schlepping out to Studio B for good D.J.'s will find a more than worthy replacement here — the room’s just a smidge smaller, but similarly minimal and airy, with two bars, black walls and ceilings, dark wood floors, and tall columns that are perfect for humping while you’re on Ecstasy. Though not yet fully installed, the sound system promises to do the cabaret license justice, with no less than sixteen five-cone speakers running the perimeter of the room. Do not come here unless you plan to dance — seating is almost nil.

Santos' Party House Actually Houses a Party

santas sign

This means you.Jason Wishnow

We got late word yesterday that Andrew W.K.’s club Santa’s Party House a.k.a. 100 Lafayette a.k.a. (and ultimately named) Santos’ Party House was soft-opening with a party featuring D.J.'s Lee Douglas, Alex from Tokyo, and Spun. We won’t share whatever video footage we may have taken because as you can see here, absolutely no photography is allowed, but know this: Though the downstairs isn’t quite as spacious as we had imagined it after three years of construction (décor equals disco balls), it’s a long overdue throwback to the days of bare-bones box clubs (think Shelter at Hubert Street), and a godsend for anyone who has ever danced in the basement of 205 thinking the experience could benefit from a little more space and a much sicker sound system. Drinks at the basic bar were $8. D.J.'s casing the joint last night included Prince Language, Tommie Sunshine, and A Touch of Class— expect the nightly lineup to follow suit. The upstairs, according to A.W.K. himself, is opening soon — till then it’s time to shut up and dance.

Will (Le) Poisson Rouge, 100 Lafayette ‘Change Life As We Know It’?

Santa's or Santos'?Photo: Melissa Hom

Amy Sacco may have told the Daily News that our nightlife is overrated, but at least some new venues are in the works. Steve Lewis, after a lot of waxing nostalgic about the Tunnel (a party was held in the club’s former space, which now houses a, um, ’wichcraft), tells us that his old spot Life, at 158 Bleecker and Thompson, will soon become “a burlesqueish performance spot.” According to its MySpace page, (Le) Poisson Rouge will open by June 15, when sadcore duo Damon and Naomi have a show (others on the schedule include jazz greats Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden).

LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy Aboard at 100 Lafayette

Like Andrew WK’s new party pad wouldn’t have a killer music program? LCD Soundsystem front man, James Murphy, reveals on his label's message board that he’ll be doing a little something there called Special Disco Version. We have no idea what else will be going on at 100 Lafayette, because AWK and his partner, Spencer Sweeney, are forgoing interviews about the venue (per a mass e-mail), but this is for certain: When it opens (still no announced date) and the kids hit the streets after last call, nearby-ish Bun is going to be very happy it decided to start serving food at all hours.

It's Time to Party at Andrew W.K.'s Place

Now a collector's item.Photo: Melissa Hom

A while back we shared the unsettling news that rocker Andrew W.K.’s years-in-the-works performance/party venue, at one point called Santa’s but now called simply 100 Lafayette (after its location near Walker Street in Tribeca), had its liquor-license application rejected after initially having it approved in 2006. But we knew the man who said “when it’s time to party, we will party hard” wouldn’t fail us: The SLA’s site indicates that a license has finally been granted. We’ve heard that the venue will hold private parties as soon as this week. It’s enough to make us join A.W.K. in a chorus of “I Love New York City.”

Brooklyn Vegan has it that on April 5 rocker-muse Andrew W.K. and artist Spencer Sweeney will host a Handsome Furs performance at their long-in-the-works venue, at one point called Santa’s Party House. We’ve heard that owners of bygone East Village dive the Hole will also be involved along with bookers from the Knitting Factory and P.S. 1’s Warm-Up series. But it might not be time to party hardy just yet.

Musician Andrew W.K. Eats Pretty Much Everything With a Side of Nuts

Andrew W.K. eats Cheetos the way he parties -- hard.Photo: Melissa Hom

What does a party animal eat? Well, peanuts, for one, and not just at parties. Andrew W.K., who has parlayed his rock anthems such as “It’s Time to Party” into a career as a performance artist and motivational speaker of sorts, tells us he eats them with everything from his breakfast cereal to junk food. “Once I started teaming Cheetos up with peanuts, I was really hitting them hard,” he says. Though he confesses to the occasional post-peanut queasiness, it hasn’t bogged him down much: In addition to kicking off the Bamboozle music festival tomorrow morning with a rousing speech, he’s currently at work on a freeform TV show, a solo piano album (and others), and a multipurpose venue to open in lower Manhattan by summer. To get an idea of what sorts of bar snacks he might just be serving at the latter, we asked him what he’s eaten this week.
