Marion’s Continental Returns, But Without Martinis Just Yet

Marion's

Back on the Bowery.Photo: Youngna Park

The future of Marion’s Continental seemed grim when it closed so that Marco Pierre White could film Chopping Block there, but rest assured it reopened last weekend after a three-month hiatus. (The Kelley and Peng space, which was also used, still seems to be vacant.) According to a bartender who couldn’t even scare up a Jack-and-Ginger (no ginger ale), the famous martinis will be back soon, and a sign on the window promises that food will also return. The walls are pretty bare right now, but there’s one addition: a door that opens onto neighboring lounge Antik (the bartender told us, over some really loud funk music, that the two are still under separate ownership). Let us know when you’re ready for us, Marion’s — we’ll have ours with a twist.

Miss Favela Sambas Into Williamsburg; Q&A With Gordon Ramsay's NYC Go-To

Astoria: A new Indian spot called Seva has replaced Meghna, and there's been some good buzz about the newbie's green-chile chicken. [Joey in Astoria]
Bay Ridge: Peppino's has introduced a hybrid of a plain pie and sausage-ricotta calzone, since, according to owner Joe Mancino, people "didn't know what they wanted. They want pizza? They want calzone? They don't know. This is the best of both worlds." But you supposedly need a password to get your hands on it, capiche? [NYDN via Slice]
East Village: Antik has been drawing a crowd, but its confusing space and reportedly crazy bouncer need work. [Down by the Hipster]
Flatiron: You have two days left to buy a fast pass for the BBQ Block Party on June 7. [Strong Buzz]
Fort Greene: Pillow Cafe put "gourmet sandwiches, snacks and fun sodas into easy-to-carry crates" for a successfully catered event, so it sounds like they're a good picnic pickup spot, as well. [Clinton Hill Blog]
Gramercy: The Lantern Thai that's opened at 311 Second Avenue is as affordable as it is classy, plus the spot's currently BYO. [Zagat]
Midtown West: In true Brit fashion, Gordon Ramsay chef de cuisine Josh Emett has a weakness for fish fingers. [Restaurant Girl]
Williamsburg: New Brazilian spot Miss Favela officially opens Monday; look forward to feijoada Saturdays, where you're encouraged to fill up on Brazil's national sausage-flecked bean dish and down caipirinhas to live samba. [Gothamist]

A First Look Inside the East Village Yacht Club

East Village Yacht Club

Last week we brought news that the East Village Yacht Club had successfully relocated from 1st Street to (where else?) the Bowery, where Antik, Bowery Electric, Vox Pop, and the new Mannahatta have also sprung up recently. Now we can bring you interior shots of the soon-to-open bar, which is so brand-spanking-new that Kelley & Ping’s sign hasn’t even been taken off the façade. As you can see from these shots, the fact that the Bowery Poetry Club is now located across from the East Village Yacht Club might just be the perfect microcosm of the Bowery in flux.

Mannahatta Reopens on the Ever-Changing Bowery

The new incarnation of Mannahatta, the hot spot that closed to make way for AvroKo’s new restaurant, reopened this weekend a couple doors down in the old Crime Scene space. (This is the fourth Bowery opening in about a week, joining Antik, Bowery Electric, and the Morrison Hotel gallery, which opens on Thursday in the old CBGB Gallery.) Crime Scene’s owners partnered with Mannahatta’s Bill Fresko to relocate the bar, and the old wall panels and a bar made from Costa Rican wood aren’t the only things he brings.

A First Look Inside Antik, Soft-Opening Tonight

Antik

It's dark in here.Photo: Melissa Hom

After attending the opening of Antik, the semi-private lounge in the old Marion’s Marquee space, we can report that it’s a serviceable after-spot for those who want to keep drinking in a retro setting during the nights when the Bowery Hotel’s lobby bar closes at 2 a.m. (of course it’s not as elaborate or elegant, which might be why the lighting is so dim).

Retreat Team Takes Over Marion's and M&R, Opens ‘Semi-Private’ Lounge

Marion's

Not any more it isn't.Photo: Youngna Park

Down by the Hipster is wondering what’s up with Antik, the “semi-private cocktail lounge” (whatever that means) coming to the former Marion’s Continental space. We’ve confirmed that it’s owned by Larry Kramer and Craig Koening, who have already opened King's Cross, an upscale pub, in the building’s basement (formerly M&R). It’ll open to the public March 21, after a press party on the 19th, and in addition to red-velvet wallpaper and black chandeliers (why not? If the antique theme worked for the Bowery Hotel across the street...), it’ll have no visible bar — up 150 patrons will give their orders to sexy cocktail waitresses who will disappear into a black box to fetch them. If Kramer and Koening are counting on this gimmick the way they were counting on the “VIP tree house” to turn their other club Retreat into a hot spot, we wish them luck.
