Miss Favela Sambas Into Williamsburg; Q&A With Gordon Ramsay's NYC Go-To

Astoria: A new Indian spot called Seva has replaced Meghna, and there's been some good buzz about the newbie's green-chile chicken. [Joey in Astoria]
Bay Ridge: Peppino's has introduced a hybrid of a plain pie and sausage-ricotta calzone, since, according to owner Joe Mancino, people "didn't know what they wanted. They want pizza? They want calzone? They don't know. This is the best of both worlds." But you supposedly need a password to get your hands on it, capiche? [NYDN via Slice]
East Village: Antik has been drawing a crowd, but its confusing space and reportedly crazy bouncer need work. [Down by the Hipster]
Flatiron: You have two days left to buy a fast pass for the BBQ Block Party on June 7. [Strong Buzz]
Fort Greene: Pillow Cafe put "gourmet sandwiches, snacks and fun sodas into easy-to-carry crates" for a successfully catered event, so it sounds like they're a good picnic pickup spot, as well. [Clinton Hill Blog]
Gramercy: The Lantern Thai that's opened at 311 Second Avenue is as affordable as it is classy, plus the spot's currently BYO. [Zagat]
Midtown West: In true Brit fashion, Gordon Ramsay chef de cuisine Josh Emett has a weakness for fish fingers. [Restaurant Girl]
Williamsburg: New Brazilian spot Miss Favela officially opens Monday; look forward to feijoada Saturdays, where you're encouraged to fill up on Brazil's national sausage-flecked bean dish and down caipirinhas to live samba. [Gothamist]

Brooklyn Needs Its Supermarkets, and Badly

key food

It may not be Whole Foods, but…Photo: Petroleumjelliffe's Flickr

Some of us who live in Brooklyn tend to think of our supermarkets more as burdens to be endured that boons to be appreciated. (If you ever looked in the meat aisle of the Ditmas Park Key Food, you’d know what we mean.) But let even a bad supermarket disappear, and you have a major blow to a community, as two stories in this week’s Brooklyn Paper show. Out in Bay Ridge, neighbors are petitioning against the closing of a Key Food on Third Avenue and 95th Street, which is slated to become a Walgreens. “We don’t need a pharmacy — we need a grocery store,” says one resident. “That property has been a grocery store for over 50 years, and it should stay a grocery store.” Meanwhile, over in Brooklyn Heights, a Gristedes closed by a fire is of such vital importance to the neighborhood that construction crews are working around the clock to get the place back online. “I hate dragging heavy stuff like a gallon of milk from Montague Street,” says a local. You can do without a dry cleaner, and you can do without a cool bar, but live somewhere where there’s no supermarket, and you’re in a tough spot, FreshDirect or no.

John McCain Likes Pepperoni Slices; Hung’s First Passover

• John McCain bought a slice of pepperoni pizza for $3 yesterday at Verrazano Pizza in Bay Ridge and, generous tipper that he is, left a $20 bill. [AP]

• In order to prepare his Passover menu at Solo, Top Chef winner Hung Huynh had to learn a lot, namely what matzo is and how to cook with it. [NYDN]

• As seafood prices rise, you might need to pick up some less expensive varieties. Tautog and croakers, anyone? [NYDN]

• If the British are throwing a third of their perfectly edible food away, then surely Americans are doing the same or worse. [Bitten/NYT]

Don't Skip the Bread at Commerce; Oh, Yoko, Save Café La Fortuna!

Upper West Side: Blossom at 466 Columbus Avenue is a candlelit vegan restaurant with a fireplace. [Gridskipper]

West Village: At newly opened Commerce, Andrea Strong "had the bread basket of the century," which included "about a half-dozen types of bread, all fresh baked in house that morning. There was a buttery mini brioche, an sourdough olive roll the shape of a fat bullet, a ciabatta and a sesame roll, and my favorite, and one that I think they should turn into a bar snack with mustards and cheese—the soft malt pretzel." Sounds like a good start. [The Strong Buzz]

Tanoreen Set to Expand to Twice Its Present Size, Still in Bay Ridge

Soon there will be twice as much Tanoreen to love.Photo: Kate Attardo

When Tanoreen topped our Cheap Eats list last year, it was a sign of favor that was bound to send more customers out to Bay Ridge. Inevitably, Tanoreen has decided to expand to accommodate all its new admirers, acquiring the lease on a nearby space twice its size. “We’re really tight on the weekend, and our lease is up. So now is the time to make the step,” chef-owner Rawia Bishara tells us. “It will be four to five months, but we won’t be closing; we’re going to move right from the one location to the other one in late spring.” So while you still have to go out to Bay Ridge, at least you'll get a table.

Take the Cab to Deepest Brooklyn for Restaurant Week

If you're in the neighborhood, and craving chicken...Photo: Robert K. Chin

The bargains at Brooklyn Restaurant Week, which starts this Monday, aren't quite as overwhelming as the Manhattan version. The deal is the same — three courses for only $21.12 at any of the listed restaurants — but few of these places are hugely expensive to begin with. Look at it this way: What you save will cover the cab fare. What follows are a few of the more far-flung Xs on our own personal Brooklyn treasure map. Generally, these aren't destination restaurants, but this week they should be.
