Good Fork’s Sohui Kim Bests Bobby Flay

Bobby Flay has taken on any number of hotshots over the course of his Throwdown With Bobby Flay show on the Food Network. But we never thought he would go to Red Hook to challenge the Good Fork's Sohui Kim in the art of cooking dumplings. That was the case on Monday’s show, which ended, we are happy to report, with a resounding win by Kim on her home territory. Because your street cred is everything in Red Hook.

Rachael Ray Remakes Barbuto for a Night

Rachael Ray and Bill Clinton turned Barbuto into their own pop-up restaurant last night, with aspiring teenage cooks (assisted by Iron Chef Michael Symon) preparing a full dinner for a crowd of celebrities. New York's Jada Yuan stopped by with a camera crew and chatted with diners Katie Lee Joel, Bobby Flay, and Joy Behar. Watch the video to see if the event was as Yum-o! as expected.

Vote for the Hottest Cook and the Hottest Crowd

In a move somewhat reminiscent of the Daily News poll that prompted Johnny Iuzzini to plead for votes, Nerve has launched “Who Would You Rather: Celebrity Chef Edition.” The pickings are slim — and we don’t mean slim in the svelte, sexy way. We mean: Gordon Ramsay vs. Bobby Flay. Flay contributed a recipe to the author’s cookbook, which explains that. But Gordo? We’re more interested in Down by the Hipster's poll asking which local watering spot pulls the most attractive women. At the time of this post, Rose Bar is inching in front of GoldBar and Beatrice. Strangely, Lucky Cheng’s isn’t even on the list…

Unlimited BBQ and Champagne Brings Out the Carnal Chef at SOBE

Bubble Q, SOBE’s Champagne-barbecue tasting party, may have been visible from the air last night. We made our way through the smoke-filled tent dodging mirror bars and fifteen-foot-high speaker stacks. We were happily waylaid by the endless chef’s tables and Champagne bars. Among the highlights:

When Esquire picked Bar Veloce’s Thomas Crowley one of the “Best Dressed Real Men in America” this month (and posed Simon Hammerstein and David Chang in pricey duds for its “Angry Young Men” spread), we realized that restaurateur style doesn’t stop at Batali’s clogs and Bobby Flay’s mom jeans. Now Us Weekly has posted its list of the “25 Most Stylish New Yorkers,” and we know a couple of the names.

Hill Country Pits Graffiti Grows Worse Each Day

Bobby Flay leaves a typically combative message.Photo: Melissa Hom

Hill Country was born old. The day it opened, its walls and air vents had been painstakingly smoked-stained, and its floors distressed to look as if 10,000 gluttons had waddled across it over the years. But the pits were brand-new. Not so anymore: After one summer of operation, they’re now signed with the regards of dozens of chefs, politicians, celebrities, and members of the barbecue underground.

Earth to Chicago: You Lost ‘Iron Chef’ Fair and Square

Still, we're betting Bowles can take Flay in backyard wrestling.Photo courtesy of the Food Network

Monday’s Iron Chef, in which Chicago chef Graham Elliot Bowles lost to Bobby Flay, has occasioned a gale of protest from the Windy City. For proud Chicagoans, it’s just not possible that Bowles could have lost; as A.J. Liebling put it, the prevailing local belief is, simply stated, that “everybody in the world is trying to put one over on Chicago.”

Casual Is the New Snooty — But Chefs Are Still Better Than You

Chefs are imperious demigods who impose endless indignities on diners, Bruni says; also admits the possibility that critics may be partially to blame. [NYT]

What's life like for big-shot chefs, anyway? How much money do they make, and where does it come from? Flay, Batali, and a number of lesser beings spill the beans. [NYT]

According to annonymous sources, Rachel Ray apparently had a few racially insensitive words to say about her new patron Oprah Winfrey two years ago. [TMZ]

Bobby Flay Has a Burger Up His Sleeve

"Wait, what am I promoting today?"Photo: Getty

Christmas was bittersweet this year: We asked for an end to gourmet-burger franchises (among other things), but our wish has not been granted. Word is that Bobby Flay is looking to enter the burger derby alongside Rachael Ray and Joe Bastianich (whose plans for a restaurant called Heritage Burger were recently reported here). Flay’s reps won’t give us the where and when (though they admit that the telegenic grill man is giving the idea some thought). Our source, however, tells us the place will be called Bobby’s Burgers and that you’ll be able to find it in one of the big Vegas casinos.

Flay to Battle Morimoto in Atlantic City

Saturday's "Women in Wine" event at the Borgata in Atlantic City would be worth going to just for the wine (23 female vintners from around the country) and the chefs (the Borgata's resident all-star team, featuring Bobby Flay, Michael Mina, Wolfgang Puck, Susanna Foo, and in-house celebrity chef Luke Palladino). But the real draw is something you'll never see on television: two of the Food Network's Iron Chefs, Flay and Masaharu Morimoto, going head to head to see whose cuisine reigns supreme. (Normally, Iron Chefs only compete against guest challengers.) The event, which will cost $195 to attend, benefits Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the Atlantic County Women's Center in New Jersey. Tickets can be purchased here or by calling 866-900-4849.

The Lentil Menace Recedes

You should see the other guy.Photo: Kanika Rehani

The New York Times revealed on Friday that New York is facing a major lentil crisis. Our first thought: Do they mean we might be forced to eat them? Apparently, the opposite is true: Due to India's OPEC-like export ban on the tiny legumes, lentil prices have tripled all over New York. But what really caught our attention was the admission by one Jackson Heights restaurateur that "80 percent" of his menu is lentil-based. Really? We like Indian food well enough, but the crisis, it seems to us, is that too many people are eating lentils to begin with. We are not alone in our loathing of the pasty spheres, which we were frequently forced to eat as children as penance for too much kugel. "Whenever I tell somebody I hate lentils, they're shocked," Bobby Flay told the Times last year. "There are a lot of lentil fans out there." We know! On behalf of our fellow city-dwellers, we hope the price goes down soon. But if it doesn't, we won't weep for the decline of the lentil. Secretly, we've been hoping for it all along.
