Our Favorite Moments From a Very Special Season of ‘Top Chef’

We can’t easily express how sorry we are to see Top Chef go. But at least we can say, as we look back at the most bizarrely enjoyable Top Chef season yet, that it’s had more than its share of memorable moments. Here are five of them that come to mind, as we head toward the twilight, in reverse order:

5. Padma Lakshmi, with the languid gravity that only she can summon, looking Erik in the face and asking, “Did you really think that was a successful corn dog?” The self-described "soul chef" had failed miserably to produce the simplest of crispy fried treats, presenting in its stead a sadly flaccid and soggy sample.

‘Top Chef Junior’ Bound, Inevitably, for Bravo

File this under Things That Had to Happen: Apparently, a lot of teenagers watch Top Chef, as according to Bravo, "season-to-date, [the show] ranks in the top 15 among kids/teens 2-17 in the Wed 10-11 p.m. time period … versus ad supported cable entertainment networks." With numbers like that, Bravo has decided to develop a Top Chef–for-teens series concept. Why not? If that doesn't work out, there's always Top Chefs Gone Wild, Ms. Top Chef, Top Chef Babies, and many more. The lesson, as always, is you can't have too many Top Chefs. The full release from Bravo, after the jump.

Unsuspecting Viewers Steamrolled by ‘Top Chef’ Truck

The Bravo blitzkrieg begins.Photo courtesy Bravo

Top Chef has no desire to relent in its national assault just because the season is almost over. Bravo is sending a Top Chef truck out on the road to visit twenty American cities. (The truck will be in New York on June 20 — we'll meet you there.) What will be in this truck? So far, Bravo promises only “cooking demonstrations, gourmet tips, and show secrets.” The secrets are apparently so well kept that no cheftestants have signed on yet.

‘Top Chef’ Conquers World by Truck and Boat

As much flack as Top Chef gets for plugging cooking wares, it’s now going to be plugging itself a lot harder. According to Broadcasting and Cable, Bravo is planning a Mediterranean cruise in which former cheftestants will present dishes, as well as a 21-city tour in an 18-wheeler. Cooking classes are also in the works.

Bravo Developing ‘Donatella’ Series

Move over, Kardashians!Photo: Melissa Hom

The formidable Donatella Arpaia, co-owner of Anthos, Mia Dona, and davidburke & donatella, has a reality series in the works with Bravo, the network says. According to a press release, Donatella “follows her as she deals with the constant challenges of staying on top in the cutthroat culinary world, keeps her demanding clientele happy and manages her diverse and eccentric staffers — while she triples her New York-based dining empire in a six month period.” We can’t wait for this show to debut. Having seen her in action, and some of those eccentric staffers too, we think the entertainment quotient should be off the charts.

Who Is This Man? And Where Does He Work?

Yes, he has a tenderizer — but does he have a job?Photo courtesy Bravo

Having seen an advance screener of the Top Chef premiere, we’re all set and ready to dig in and immerse ourselves in the show’s patented straight-faced lunacy this season. But something is getting in the way. The most annoying of the new cheftestants — this season’s Howie — is the high-strung Andrew, supposedly a cook somewhere here in New York. But where? His Top Chef bio calls him a “Sous Chef in NYC,” but no one seems to be able to give us a hint of where. (One tipster seemed to think that it was at Tocqueville, but the lead was a dead end: Jo Ann Makovitzky, Tocqueville’s co-owner, tells us, “He does not look familiar to me.”) Have you seen this man? Tell us all about him in the comments.

The ‘Top Chef’–‘Project Runway’ Mash-up We've Been Waiting For

Dale & Jack

Who designs the pants in this family?Courtesy Bravo

How did such a coupling take so long? Top Chef’s Dale Levitski (who was NOT invited back for this week’s holiday special) and Project Runway’s Jack Mackenroth are dating! Here’s the dirt: “We randomly met over MySpace,” says Dale. “I like keeping it incestuous. Keep it in the Bravo family,” says Jack.

Other pairings we’d like to see:
Sam Talbot and Uli Herzner
Mike Midgley and Wendy Pepper
Elia Aboumrad and Michael Knight

Have any suggestions for hot Project RunwayTop Chef crossovers? Play matchmaker in the comments.

The Tragic Tales Behind ‘Top Chef’

Harold Dieterle leveraged his win into a restaurant, at least.Photo: Jessica Wynne

So let’s say you somehow make it on to Top Chef or Project Runway, elbowing past the thousands of other rivals seeking to fertilize the egg of an upcoming reality-TV-show season. And let’s say you even win the contest, getting crowned Top Chef or No. 1 designer: Shouldn’t that be enough to launch a career? You would think it would be, but as Jennifer Senior’s article from this week’s issue reveals, it often isn’t — a fact we hope our own Top Chef non-winners, like our friends Joey and Lia, will remember as they return to the kitchens they knew before fame came calling.
