Busy Chef Manager Out on Bail, Boston Victims Step Forward

Dan Kaufman, the manager of several Brooklyn Heights eateries who is accused of credit-card fraud and identity theft, has a bad reputation in Boston, too, The Brooklyn Paper reports. A grand jury will meet this week to determine whether to indict Kaufman for allegedly stealing credit-card numbers from customers at two Busy Chef locations, the pizzeria Oven, Blue Pig, and the Wine Bar. Kaufman surrendered to police on July 17 after nearly $25,000 was charged to nineteen customers' credit cards. (A suspicious employee caught Kaufman in the act and began gathering evidence.) His girlfriend bailed him out for $50,000, and Kaufman is now avoiding the press. Back in Boston, a former landlord has sued Kaufman for opening several restaurants but failing to pay some $40,000 in rent. One supplier withdrew Kaufman's line of credit after he was owed $10,000: “He screwed people three ways to Sunday. I don’t know how he does it — he can look at you smiling and lie to your face, and not even bat an eyelash.” Sounds like the perfect person to run a restaurant. No wonder he's been so busy.

Brooklyn Needs Its Supermarkets, and Badly

key food

It may not be Whole Foods, but…Photo: Petroleumjelliffe's Flickr

Some of us who live in Brooklyn tend to think of our supermarkets more as burdens to be endured that boons to be appreciated. (If you ever looked in the meat aisle of the Ditmas Park Key Food, you’d know what we mean.) But let even a bad supermarket disappear, and you have a major blow to a community, as two stories in this week’s Brooklyn Paper show. Out in Bay Ridge, neighbors are petitioning against the closing of a Key Food on Third Avenue and 95th Street, which is slated to become a Walgreens. “We don’t need a pharmacy — we need a grocery store,” says one resident. “That property has been a grocery store for over 50 years, and it should stay a grocery store.” Meanwhile, over in Brooklyn Heights, a Gristedes closed by a fire is of such vital importance to the neighborhood that construction crews are working around the clock to get the place back online. “I hate dragging heavy stuff like a gallon of milk from Montague Street,” says a local. You can do without a dry cleaner, and you can do without a cool bar, but live somewhere where there’s no supermarket, and you’re in a tough spot, FreshDirect or no.

Tazza Says, ‘No Internet for You!’

They mean business.Photo: Courtesy of Marquis Platinum

As we recently discovered, certain restaurateurs have a flexible attitude about computers in dining rooms, but don’t be surprised if Tazza of Brooklyn Heights slams your Mac Air screen down on your knuckles. The last time we saw a sign this forceful it was posted outside of a housing project. How about a more polite approach — such as the sign in the bathroom at Weather Up?

Brooklyn Bridge Park Beach, home of the Floating Pool at Pier 5, is currently being serviced by Hawk with Stahl-Meyer hot dogs and draft Abita root beer, but Hawk confides to us that he sees his concession “expanding in a Schnäck-like direction.”
