Red Hook Vendors Return; What the Candidates Like to Eat

• The Red Hook vendors have returned! Prices are “ever-so-slightly higher” and only six out of ten stands are open, owing to pending DOH approval, but they’re back. [Eater]

• Apparently in Brooklyn it’s acceptable to rent out restaurants for nude dinner parties. [NYP]

• Club-related crime, general debauchery, and puking all appear to be on the rise in the still-not-dead club scene in Chelsea. [NYP]

El Cid Closes As Other Spanish Joints Open

ilan hall

Hasta la vista, El Cid.Photo: Robert K. Chin

Last night, at week-old paella-and-tapas joint Socarrat, the communal table was fully ocupado and dotted with bottles that BYOB-ers had purchased a couple of blocks away (the liquor license is pending). Owner Jesus Manso was in high spirits, insisting on scraping burnt food onto our dish (actually a good thing!). As we mentioned earlier today, George Mendes will soon bring another Spanish spot to Chelsea and Ilan Hall will bring one to the meatpacking, but the bad news for the neighborhood’s Iberia-philes is this: A tipster tells us that twenty-year-old standby and hidden gem El Cid closed last weekend; the phone is already disconnected. ¡Que lástima! If you’re looking for an old-school escape from the meatpacking madness, we’re now redirecting you to El Faro.

High Tide at the Frying Pan

Spot Check
When we told you about the Frying Pan’s quiet reopening last week, a commenter wrote, “noooooo … I hate sharing.” And who wouldn't understand this reaction? By Thursday, the boat was in full swing again, according to a tipster. The good thing about the Pan, of course, is that seating abounds — when we stopped in this past Saturday at 10 p.m. for a follow-up inspection, the joint was most definitely hopping (or blazing, in the case of one patron) but it stopped just short of being the Dockers commercial from hell.

The Boat Is Back! Frying Pan Finally Reopens

frying pan

At last, indeed.Photo: Daniel Maurer

Okay, now it’s summer. After being dry-docked by bureaucracy, the Frying Pan quietly reopened last Thursday, and though it will now have to close at a schoolgirl-ish 1 a.m. seven days a week, everything else looks, dare we say, better than ever. A stop in (or stop on) yesterday revealed a fancier covered bar area, some new antique bar stools, a central fountain, and Ping-Pong and Foosball tables. The crowd was blessedly thin last night — so much so that the kitchen closed around 10:30 p.m., though not before we had a lobster on the water and a $5 beer (mixed drinks are a couple bucks more). Here — because you know you’re curious — is the rest of the menu.

Their next chance to plead their case for reopening the club will be August 12. Meanwhile, here’s a rundown of those who did show up and were recommended for liquor licenses by the CB’s Business Licenses & Permits committee.

The Frying Pan Won’t Be Open This Weekend, After All

At her old location.Photo courtesy of Frying Pan

Just when Newsday said it was safe to go back to the Frying Pan, amNY gives word that the riverboat’s summer opening will be delayed yet again. Quoth the paper’s Urbanist blog: “ ‘It's just day by day,’ [owner John Krevey] said, and then proceeded to unspool a Kafkaesque nightmare involving Certificate of Occupancy permits, which we will, mercifully, spare you.” Eventually, the Frying Pan will be back to its cacophonous, vibrating, waterside self, and we’ll let know when it absolutely, positively opens for business.

Frying Pan Will Reopen This Weekend

At her old location.Photo courtesy of Frying Pan

Today Newsday brings the beyond-glorious news that the Frying Pan, after relocating to Pier 66A and taking last summer off while it negotiated its lease and tried to secure permits, will finally reopen this weekend. The party vessel and café will have earlier closing times than when it was stationed at Pier 63, but then again, it’s a miracle that it's opening at all, given the bureaucratic hoops it had to jump through at the hands, apparently, of the Hudson River Park Trust — Frying Pan advocates say the trust wasn’t supportive of having something totally awesome docked off of the park where West Village residents read their Sunday Times. To the haters, we say, take one look at this and count your blessings the Frying Pan is the only thing you have to fret about.

1OAK Owners Deny Accusations of Covering Up Hate Crime

1OAK, the almost-meatpacking lounge that revels in pistol imagery, is feeling some heat on the blogosphere — on Monday, Down by the Hipster reported the club was raided, and, although that seems to have been misinformation (denials were issued to both us and to DBTH), Gawker is now reporting on an actual incident that occurred there around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday. An eyewitness tells the site that two individuals were attacked by a man who used a homophobic slur. One of the victims ended up needing stitches after being rushed to the hospital, and yet the eyewitness claims that 1OAK owners Scott Sartiano and Richie Akiva told him not to call 911 or take an ambulance. A 1OAK rep denied that version of events to us and sent the following official statement:

Names: Jamison Blankenship and Robert Cook

Age: 37 and 29, respectively

Restaurant: Morimoto

Backgrounds: Blankenship, Morimoto’s chef de cuisine, grew up in New Orleans, but didn't start in the restaurant business until he was 31. He worked in Washington’s famous Citronelle, and for two years had his own restaurant in D.C., before joining Morimoto as a sous-chef when it opened two years ago.

Cook, the restaurant's head sushi chef, had a Lana Turner moment as a sushi assistant at Koi: Masaharu Morimoto came in, saw Cook working the line, and offered him a job on the spot.

Barocco Café Coming to Ninth Avenue and 17th Street

Over at Vanishing New York, Jeremiah Moss suspects that restaurateur Danny Emerman is behind a new restaurant on 17th Street and Ninth Avenue. A mangled spelling of Barocco is on some documents taped to the building, but Emerman denied involvement to us, adding that his relationship with Barocco ended a decade ago. Barocco's current owner, Cristina Orosco, says the new outpost, a slightly larger and more upscale version of the Union Square standby, will be called Barocco Café. Barring delays, she expects to open the restaurant at the end of May or beginning of June.

With the wine-bar craze going at full tilt, it’s only natural that the Malta brothers, with a dozen restaurants to their credit, would want in. But now the winemakers from north are coming down and helping, and the wines in that region are going into another gear.”

Confirmed: Passerby Will Close This Month

Earlier, we reported a rumor that Passerby is closing this next Saturday. We’ve now received word from owner Toby Cecchini, whose book Cosmopolitan chronicles a day in the life of the bar, that the last night will actually be March 29, though it will probably be a private affair. Although Cecchini still has seven years left on the lease, he says his landlord is prying him out under a “demolition clause,” since he’s demolishing the building in order to convert another building down the block to condos. Cecchini doesn’t have plans or a space for a new bar yet, and, even if he did, he says, “It could take me a year and a half. What I really want is the bar I’ve nurtured for the last ten years, and that ain’t gonna happen.” It’s undetermined whether patrons will be allowed to pour one out on the bar’s light-up dance floor.

Rumor has it that the demise of Passerby is imminent. Former resident D.J. But Alex Zachary at Gavin Brown Enterprise tells us that as far as he knows, a date hasn’t yet been set. Of course, he might just be trying to make sure the tiny bar doesn’t get overrun, which is why we suggest you pay your respects during the week and leave the weekend to those who know what “Pussy Juice” is (don’t ask).
