Is New York Becoming a 2 A.M. Town?

"It's closing time..."Photo: istockphoto

A story in today’s Sun hits very close to home. (Home as in, where we should’ve been at 2:30 this morning.) As Grub readers shouldn’t be surprised to read, community boards are increasingly placing restrictions on closing times when they recommend bars for liquor licenses, despite the fact that nightlife venues make 58 percent of their bank after 1 a.m. Here’s the sobering (literally!) last sentence:

Inside Sasha Petraske's Mercury Dime

Coffee without the secret phone number.Photo: Nick Atlas

A couple of weeks ago the magazine offered a peek into the Mercury Dime, Sasha Petraske's latest venture in the East Village. A year after the community board shot down its bid for a wine-and-beer license (not even the proprietor of ultraquiet Milk and Honey can get a liquor license in this town), the venture is now up and running as a coffee shop — and though we're dismayed to know we won't be able to enjoy a nice cava here anytime soon, some strong gourmet coffee should perk us up. Anyhow, seems time to take a closer look inside.

CB Smiles on Triple Crown, Approves Balthazar Barkeep's Bistro

Lindsey Robertson, wife of Triple Crown owner Myles Tipley, tells us that after a lot of wrestling with the community board, the hip-hop bar’s liquor license has been approved for transfer to Jeff Webber, who Robertson says is a bartender at Balthazar planning to open a lounge/wine bar/café. You’ll recall the diminutive space was at one point going to be sold to gym owner Mike Jaramillo, who’s opening Viñas on December 7.

Richie Akiva's and Scott Sartiano's 1OAK Will Not Open Friday

Richie Akiva

A while back Richie Akiva told us his new spot 1OAK was poised to “change the face of nightlife in New York.” That remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: It won’t be opening this Friday as originally planned. At a meeting last night, Akiva’s partner, Scott Sartiano, and their lawyer, Rob Bookman, said the club was not ready to open, according to a community-board source. Akiva plans to apply for a construction-alteration application in November, partly in hopes that a reduced capacity will make it easier for him to score the cabaret license he’s going after. (According to our source, Sartiano and Bookman said the establishment wouldn’t be a dance club — they just want a means of defense against the dance police). Asked about a new opening date, a spokesman for 1OAK said simply, “We are working with local community leaders to develop 1OAK according to the laws and regulations mandated by the city of New York.” For those of you who want to get your dance on ASAP, take heart — Marquee’s liquor license was recommended for renewal.

CB to Richie Akiva's New Club: Not So Fast!

Community Board 4 was surprised to hear Richie Akiva tell us that he and partner Scott Sartiano are planning to open their new spot 1OAK (remember? The one that will “change the face of nightlife”?) on October 19. According to a board member, the Butter boys don’t exactly have their papers in order, since they applied for a cabaret license without going through the CB as required. They’ve now agreed to withdraw the application until the CB votes in early November.

News cameras galore may have been trained on Ivan Kane’s appearance at last night’s contentious CB2 meeting, but uptown an equally compelling drama unfolded as CB4’s business committee pondered the liquor-license renewals of the Roxy, Pacha, Crobar and Pink Elephant, and Sol — oh, just about every megaclub in the city!
