Grimaldi’s Owner Says It Was All Just a Big Mix-up

grimaldi's

It could have happened to anybody.Photo: Robert K. Chin

Grimaldi's seizure by tax authorities last week was explained to the Brooklyn Paper by owner Frank Ciolli as “something that got screwed up and we sorted it out.” Really? What got screwed up? Ciolli declined to give more details, but did trot out the trusty “accounting error” excuse. “People make mistakes,” he said. Especially in wildly profitable cash-only businesses.

Grimaldi’s Briefly Seized by Tax Authorities

grimaldi's

Albany to Grimaldi's: Two pies and $150,000, please.Photo: Robert K. Chin

Albany showed Grimaldi's who's boss yesterday when the state briefly closed the wildly popular Dumbo pizzeria for nonpayment of taxes. For two years, the restaurant has been disputing sales and withholding taxes, and the state issued tax warrants for over $150,000. There was nothing for the coal-oven icon to do but pay up, and that's what it did, after which it was allowed to reopen. (Grimaldi's is apparently better at setting up a viable payment plant than your corner slice shop.) But it was hard luck on the hungry customers waiting in line outside, according to am New York: “Earlier on Wednesday, window gates were pulled down on the front of the restaurant. A handwritten sign on the door said the business was shut because of electrical problems and would reopen at 4:00 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. no one answered the telephone.”

Dumbo-Area Lecture Asks Why Chefs' Wives Always Leave

chef flyer

The question answers itself.Photo courtesy DumboNYC.com

DumboNYC just posted this image of a flyer for a ten-minute lecture from earlier today titled "Chefs, and Why Their Wives Always Leave." Our question: Did this speaker really need ten minutes? It takes less than ten seconds to say, "Because chefs often like to, um, party with other pretty women." Still, having not attended the lecture, we can't say. Perhaps it took a more humanistic approach.

Matsugen Is on the Way; How to Make Ribs Like Blue Smoke

Dumbo: J's Wine & Spirits has only been open for a few weeks, but the small business has already had its windows vandalized and broken. Toro Declares Independence From Spain, Goes Pan-Asian

Toro Asian Fusion

The main dining room.Photo: Melissa Hom

Spanish-Asian tapas spot Toro opened a few years ago, but never really filled the airy former bank building it was located in, so owners Tom Tao and Marcelo Pevida (with the help of new management) redesigned the place as a flashy Pan-Asian restaurant with a lofted, glassed-in dining lounge and a third-floor party space. John Lin, formerly of Bamboo, is now in the kitchen turning out entrées such as a Dijon-soy-glazed chicken breast with mashed potatoes and red-wine cranberry sauce. His Two of Beef special pairs a grilled filet mignon with a sake-braised short ribs. Meanwhile, at the sushi bar, Wing Lee, formerly of Cru, turns out a dizzying variety of rolls. There's also a long list of sweet, flower-garnished cocktails at the two bars, but assuming you’re in Dumbo during the day, the real lure here may be the three-course lunch special: a soup, appetizer, and entrée for $10 to $14. There’s delivery to the 11201 Zip Code, but know that if you call in, you’re missing the two-story waterfall.

Brooklyn Pigfest Is Tomorrow, and They’d Better Not Run Out This Time

There was a veritable mountain of pork...at first.Photos: Melissa Hom

Now here’s a happy sign that summer is almost upon us: Brooklyn Pigfest, the annual Dumbo day of whole-hog feasting, is tomorrow. The event, which is being held in the roofless Tobacco Building, underneath the Manhattan Bridge, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., gets bigger every year, and it’s not hard to see why: It’s one of the only places in the city where you can eat a full-size barbecued pig, not an insipid, frighteningly vulnerable-looking piglet, as at most restaurants. And between the live band, the Brooklyn Brewery beer on tap, and the sun-dappled setting, there are plenty of other reasons to go. But the pig is the main thing, and visitors have cause to worry if there’s enough to go around. Last year, Brooklyn Pigfest ran out of pig midway through the event, which made for a lot of not-very-happy picnickers. While it lasts, though, it's bound to be good, cooked as it is every year by Sam Barbieri and Ralph Yedinak from the Waterfront Ale House, the city's most unheralded barbecuers. Tickets are available, for $85 a person, at the Brooklyn Brewery Website.

Details Bubble Up About New York Wine & Food Festival

Not everyone is behind the New York version of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, occurring October 9–12 (you’ll recall local restaurateurs had mixed reactions), but Eater brings news of events that may get more people behind it: In addition to Rachael Ray’s previously announced burger bash in Dumbo, there’ll be a multi-restaurant wine tasting in the meatpacking district; a wine seminar hosted by Del Posto; talks with Ferran Adria, Nigella Lawson, Alice Waters, and maybe Bourdain; and a private dinner prepared by Alain Ducasse. Hey, it beats smoothies and Italian sausage.

So it was no problem to pull together three good food scribes for a talk tonight at 7 p.m. at Powerhouse Arena in Dumbo. The speakers will be former Brooklyn Record editor Kara Zuaro (I Like Food, Food Tastes Good), memoirist Phoebe Damrosch (Service Included), and cocktail historian David Wondrich (Imbibe!).
