At Penn Station, a Perfect Storm of Government Regulation

penn station

Lucy in the house.Photo: Daniel Maurer, Cellar Door

Penn Station was a veritable cross-section of government regulation this weekend — the Taco Bell posted signs telling its customers it wasn’t serving tomatoes per an FDA advisory, and, per Cellar Door, the station’s two Dunkin' Donuts (yes, there are two Dunkins, and two Starbucks, too) were dutifully posting calorie counts. One problem: One of the locations claimed a chocolate glazed donut was 80 calories while the other had it at 340 calories. D’ohh! Or rather: “Mmmm, doughnuts.”

Rachael Ray Takes Her Coffee With Islamic Jihad?

rachael ray

In poor taste?MSNBC

Rachael Ray is kind of cursed when it comes to her Dunkin’ Donuts ads: First she was accused of being a Starbucks aficionado, and now — even worse! — a terrorist sympathizer. According to the The Boston Globe, Dunkin’ has pulled ads in which she wears a scarf resembling a kaffiyeh, which conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin protests is “the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad.” Yikes! We’re sure Rachael (or her stylist, who picked the thing out in the first place) was just trying for more of the indie-rock cred she got with her South by Southwest showcase, but the question remains — why would conservatives turn on Rachael when she was so cool about Cindy McCain jacking her recipes?

Dunkin' Do NOT: Employee Busted for Peeping

Women’s rooms often have bells and whistles that men’s rooms don’t — makeup counters, for instance. But here’s something you don’t want to see: The Post reports that a Dunkin’ Donuts employee in Long Island was caught spying on women by installing a wireless cam in a fake smoke detector. Hey, anything to put a little pep in your voice when you wake up and say, “Time to make the doughnuts…”

The Shocking Secrets of Chain-Restaurant Calorie Counts

balthazar

"I'll have an omelette with a side of 'Who the f*** cares?'"Menu courtesy of IHOP.

A recent appeal has kept everyone wondering: What will happen when the law requiring New York's chain restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus finally takes effect? Will tumbleweeds roll through Starbucks as coffee drinkers realize just how fattening that Frappuccino is? Calorie information is already available online for most chains. According to a rep, since IHOP started posting calorie counts almost two months ago, “guest reaction has been almost nonexistent.”

The New Yorkers we surveyed at Chipotle and Starbucks in Union Square yesterday didn't seem too concerned. But after perusing some of the juicy morsels we’ve dug up, they might just consider the Baconator a “healthy” option.

Dunkin’ Donuts Strikes Fear in the Heart of Williamsburgers

Disaster looms.Photo courtesy Gowanus Lounge

There was no small amount of outcry when Subway came to Bedford Avenue. Now Gowanus Lounge brings news that another chain is hitting the boulevard — and not even a hipster-approved one like White Castle or In-N-Out. We’re talking about a Dunkin' Donuts. Couldn’t it at least have been a Krispy Kreme? And is this why Dunkin' spokesperson Rachael Ray has been trying to cast herself as an indie-rock darling?

Vera Wang Gives Guests Bobo Coffee While Waiters Do Dunkin'

Let them drink Dunkin'.Photo: GettyImages

With Fashion Week revving up, our fashion blog the Cut stopped into Vera Wang’s Lavender showing at, oddly enough, Bobo. No doubt its French country chairs were comfier than the usual folding variety celebs have to put up with alongside the runway, and guests were treated to Bobo’s freshly brewed coffee. The waiters, however, had to settle for Dunkin’ Donuts. Not even Starbucks!! No doubt Rachael Ray is hoping this Dunkin’ discrepancy overshadows her own.

Rachael Ray Brushes Off Her Starbucks Scandal As ‘Ridiculous’

Could this be the last known image of the two together?Photo: Getty Images

The blowback from last week’s item about Rachael Ray, in which the Food Network star was reputed to have demanded Starbucks rather than her own officially endorsed Dunkin' Donuts coffee, has apparently reached Ray. OK! magazine sent a reporter to a Friday taping of The Rachael Ray Show to ask the inexplicably omnipresent food personality about the rumor and its possible damage to her relationship with Dunkin’ Donuts. The wholly predictable response? “It's ridiculous. It's absolutely ridiculous.” We agree, Rache! But you didn’t say whether it was true!

Rachael Ray Doesn't Like Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Any More Than We Do

And if you give me that swill again, expect to get hit with this.Photo: Getty Images

A friend of Grub Street writes us:

So a friend of mine was on set last week as Rachael Ray filmed her latest Dunkin' Donuts commercial. According to her, Rachael stormed onto the set and snapped at everyone. Not news, I know, everyone knows she's actually a gigantic asshole. BUT! I am also told she took one sip of her Dunkin' Donuts coffee, yelled “What is this shit? Get me MY coffee,” and would not continue until she was given “her” coffee — i.e., Starbucks.

If this is true, it's is the first thing we've read that makes us like Rachael Ray. Maybe her diva-ish behavior is what's causing the turmoil at her magazine, but we're with her on this one: Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is the worst.

Now that she’s retired from the graffiti game, Queens-born Claw Money (whose signature claw you’ve seen all over the city and on Ecko apparel) says she has “like, 10,000 jobs.” In addition to designing her own line and finishing her second book, Shady Lady (it’s about eyewear), she’s the fashion director for Swindle magazine, a coveted brand consultant, and the wardrobe supervisor for a top-secret VH1 pilot. So how does she get into work mode? “It’s not a good day,” she says, “unless you start it out with a bagel.” As she prepped for a party launching the sneakers she designed for Nike, she told us what the rest of her days entailed.
