Pigs Not Safe in the East Village; Why Can't We All Party Like a Studio B Party?

East Village: The E.U. will roast a suckling pig every Wednesday through the spring. [Grub Street]

Alex Day of Death & Co. Cringes Over Dirty Martinis

"If someone is adamant that they want their Cosmo, we can make them something similar like a pomegranate gimlet."Photo: Melissa Hom

Alex Day started going to Death & Co. as a customer, when he lived around the corner and was a manager at the Back Room. “I was almost a groupie of the bartenders at the time,” he tells us. Six months ago, he crossed over to the other side of the bar, and now the menu features one of his drinks, the Light & Day — a mingling of gin, orange juice, maraschino liquor, and yellow chartreuse. He hopes to add to that when the staff brainstorms the spring cocktail list this week — in the meantime we thought we’d talk to him about cocktail culture.

Holy Cannoli! Veniero's Shuttered by Health Department

A reader writes in with some unhappy intel:

I walked past Veniero's around 4:30 p.m. today and it had a "closed due to health code violations" sign on the entrance door. Two women (owners?) were also putting up a handwritten sign in an adjacent window regarding the closure, something to the effect of, "After 114 years … we are closing due to renovations that created the health code issues." The women putting up the sign said they were addressing the problem, to check back soon and that they would be reopening again.

Eater has a photo from the scene. Here's hoping the matter is resolved in time for our mother to get an Italian-style cheesecake for Mom’s Day.

Free Nice Lunch in Midtown; You Can Dance If You Want to at Sway

East Village: Song 7.2 took only five days to open in the American Grill space. Other restaurants should take a cue from them: Just change "signage in the window, implant a new menu and a new chef, and doneski." [Eater] A Japanese restaruant near 13th Street and Avenue A is collecting signatures for a liquor license and considering taking the name F-U. That should be a fun community-board meeting. Gael Greene Goes on a Craigslist Date at Ko, Stirs Controversy

The guy who posted a Craiglist ad asking for someone to pay for his dinner at Momofuku Ko actually got some takers — and some high-profile ones, at that. He told our own Gael Greene, his ultimate choice, that he turned down Frank Bruni for her (Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, and Elvis certainly would’ve done the same.) In a post, Gael says she’ll tell us about the “shocking farewell” she received from David Chang in a follow-up, but, in the meantime, Eater offers juicy speculation.

Falafelgate Drama Mounts: ‘Spam Isn't Kosher’

Earlier, we pointed out that there was something fishy about the fact that Kosher Village, the falafel joint that found its name via a $3,000 contest, reserved the domain name www.koshervillagenyc.com two weeks before the entry deadline. We received a call today from someone who said he submitted the name Kosher Village on March 20, but when he asked owner Nissim Oron for his $3,000, he was told that someone selected the name before him. Was it all a scam?

Falafelgate Unfolds: Contest May Have Closed Early

Earlier we joked that an anonymous falafel joint’s search for a name — the hum-drum Kosher Village, as it turned out — may have been nothing more than a marketing ploy, but we didn’t know how right we were. An observant reader e-mailed to tell us that although the restaurant said entries would be accepted until April 28, it registered what would become the winning domain name two weeks earlier, on April 12. Here’s the evidence, via whois.com.

Nameless Kosher Restaurant Chooses Contest Winner

kosher village

That was the best entry??Photo: Daniel Maurer

When the restaurant that was formerly Chickpea turned glatt kosher and announced over a month ago that it would rename itself via a contest offering $3,000, we expected the winning name would be, well, catchy, even if not quite as colorful as Hummuscidal or Your Mother Eats Falafel Balls — just two of the hundreds of entries. (Then there was the suggestion of a Grub Street commenter: Shawarmonger.) But the winner is … Kosher Village? They paid $3,000 for this? They should've just invested that cash in a viral-marketing campaign! Oh, wait…

Gridskipper’s Ramen Picks Exclude the Most Famous Noodle Bar of All

ramen

Ramen in the morning, ramen in the evening…Photo: IStockphoto

The city’s ramen rivalries grow hotter each day, and so yesterday Gridskipper did the service of laying out their picks, in order, for the best Japanese-noodle broths. Number one with a bullet is Hakata Ippudo, the East Village newcomer created by the so-called King of Ramen. As far as Gridskipper is concerned, the title is well earned, but then none of the comments on the various ramen houses are especially pointed. (“Setagaya's specialty is shio ramen (‘salt’ broth) — some think it's the best in the city.”) What may be, however, is the absence of the most famous ramen bar of all, Momofuku, from the list.
