WTF: The Steamy Paintings at El Cantinero

No, we didn't see these on the side of a van.Photo: Melissa Hom

The second exhibit in our Museum of WTF Restaurant Art is on loan from El Cantinero, the Mexican restaurant known (to NYU-ers, anyway) for its Monday-night all-you-can-eat special and for being confused with Il Cantinori in an episode of Sex and the City. We prefer the upstairs, where there’s an outdoor deck and (in the bar) a ridiculous happy hour with free food, but downstairs has its own perks — these paintings! We leave it to you to interpret them, or to come up with the titles of the romance novels they’d be fit to grace the cover of.

Cheap Eats: Gourmet Bar Snacks

Sometimes the free hot dogs at Rudy’s or the complimentary happy-hour buffet at El Cantinero just don’t cut it, and you want to nosh on something a little more gourmet when you’re at the bar. Songstress Vanessa Carlton turned us on to the free happy-hour hors d’oeuvre at Aurora, but there are plenty of other options — from curry-dusted popcorn to wheels of Greek cheese – as our roundup goes to show.

Cinco de Mayo, Oh, My Oh!

Personally, we always celebrate Cinco de Mayo on the second floor of El Cantinero, the cheesy margarita mill not to be confused with the decidedly tonier Il Cantinori. But if a jukebox full of androgynous Mexican boy bands and the tackiest light show this side of Queens don’t cut it, this week’s Bar Buzz has the scoop on slightly more refined celebrations at local restaurants. (You’ll realize we’re using the term “refined” loosely once you discover the meaning of the word “popo.”)

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
