Sapa–Douglas Rodriguez Deal May Be on the Rocks

We were happy to read last week that the Times had confirmed our report that Nuevo Latino chef Douglas Rodriguez was returning to New York to run a restaurant called Nuela in the old Sapa space. But an item on Eater, via an anonymous tipster, has us concerned: “It looks as though that has fallen through. Staff members are coming to the restaurant trying to get their paychecks, and no one is there to open the door.” Sapa owner Brian Matzkow denied to Eater that anything is amiss, but now there's nothing to do but wait and see.

Patsy’s Pizza for 60 Cents in Harlem This August; Fresher Isn’t Always Better in Sushi

Astoria: Winegasm has some tasty bites, but the Gasm Dip has sort of a strange taste that might even have more to do with licorice flavoring than the bean spread's unfortunate name. [Joey in Astoria]
Clinton Hill: A beautiful fresh produce stop called Atlantic Tropics has opened on Atlantic Avenue near Grand, and it's not going to get much foot traffic so you'll have to search it out. [Clinton Hill Blog]

Midtown East: Sushi Yasuda chef Naomichi Yasuda explains how his restaurant is a rare peek at "old Japan. Big cuts are seen as a positive thing in this new sushi world, which is not necessarily true. Also, people think that the fresher a fish is the better it is. This is generally true, but some fish are actually better after a day or two." [Zagat Buzz] Frank Bruni's compiled a list of the city's most attractive restaurants, and in the era of designer spaces, the Four Seasons holds its own for being "conventionally elegant." [NYT]
Park Slope: The last old-school butcher in the hood, A&S Pork Store, might be pushed out of its space in the next three months partly because of a family feud, according to a real estate blogger: "[T]he daughter of the former owner (still all family) is jacking their rent up b/c she knows she can get more money for that space and doesn’t care that the family business won’t be able to afford it." What the New San Domenico May Look Like

san domenico

The Sims: San Domenico edition.Image courtesy Eater

Owner Tony May’s description of the new San Domenico may have been evocative, but there’s nothing like Sims-style computer graphics to really capture the feeling of what a restaurant is going to look like. In the renderings — obtained by Eater — transparent figures float throughout the pictures, like so many spirits of restaurants past, each one no doubt murmuring conversational inanities just beyond the reach of living patrons’ hearing. Certainly, the restaurant looks a lot more modern (maybe even too much so) than we would have expected, but May sounded like he intended to go for broke with his new place, and it looks like he has.

Future of Silver Swan (and Its Tranny Party) Is Uncertain

silver swan

This guy's going to be feeling it.Photo: Matt Mimiaga

Eater reports that German-American standby Silver Swan is due to close this weekend, and owner Michael Moscatt confirms that it’s most likely true. He blames “asshole landlords — and you can quote me on that,” but says there’s a possibility of a white knight coming in at the last second. “I met with somebody just an hour ago,” he told us, “to keep the place open as is [with] an infusion of cash and to work a certain deal.” Moscatt says he’s meeting two other people over the weekend and may also get support from an associate of Nazz Somera (a.k.a. “Ina”), who for the past seven years has thrown Saturday-night transgender parties at the restaurant. Photographer Matt Mimiaga, who has documented them (God's work!), tells us the action is pretty much G-rated compared to the tranny bars of old, although there are always NSFW photos to be taken at the apartment of one “Georgina” after the festivities. We don’t think we have what it takes to hang at Gigi’s pad, so here’s hoping the Silver Swan and its G-rated party lives on. Moscatt says he’ll know more on Monday.

You can't get away from New York, Doug!Photo: Patrick McMullan

Sources near Sapa tell us that the French-Vietnamese restaurant, formerly helmed by Patrica Yeo, may be bringing Nuevo Latino pioneer Douglas Rodriguez onboard to head the kitchen. Rodriguez has been out of the picture in New York since the days of Chicama and Pipa, but he’s been busy with restaurants in Chicago, Miami, Arizona, and Philly. We doubt he would be in the kitchen every night — this sounds like a consulting gig — but who can say? Sapa's publicist would neither confirm nor deny Rodriguez's possible involvement, saying only, “We’re always looking for great chefs.”

Newly installed pitmaster Pete Daversa, 33, has begun expanding the Hill Country menu, and the results have been explosive. “I made ten racks of boar ribs the other day, and they sold out before we could write them on the menu,” he tells us.
