Have Models Turned Rose Bar into the World’s Fanciest High School Cafeteria?

Scene of the bottle battles.Photo courtesy of the Gramercy Park Hotel

In an ABC News piece about “the ugly side of modeling,” Noel Ashman said, “Everyone wants a piece of them.” Ironic, since our old friend Baird Jones once told us that Ashman’s club, The Plumm, is notorious for planting young models at tables. Just how heated does the model grab get? Blogger Chipping Mademoiselle, who was at Rose Bar recently, describes a “turf war” over the matter of “who has the best girls (more famous models) at their table, and who can convince more girls to ‘switch sides.’” Case in point: “Bridgette, one of the girls at my table, tells me that she knows the promoters next to us. Yet, because she is at another table, they refuse to acknowledge her existence when she says hi! But had she not been with a group of models, they would have been very, ‘Oh hi darling,’ with her.” Ew. At least in the high school cafeteria, Tang didn’t cost $20.

Ess-a-Bagel Customer Demands: ‘Stop the Scooping’

ess-a-bagel

A friend of Grub Street has alerted us to a trend among her fellow females that is as disturbing to bagel lovers as the whole "Jack and Diet" thing is to anyone who takes drinking seriously. She writes in:
For over twenty years I’ve frequented Ess-a-Bagel, one of the best bagel shops in NY. It's got its charm, what with the "bagel facial" (the steam from the bagels being cooked) that blasts you when you enter (you’re lucky when it’s cinnamon raisin— the garlic bagels attach to your clothing all day). The same guys have worked there for years and thankfully they all know what I order (I get claustrophobic very easily, and hate waiting). However, recently something has driven me away from my beloved bagel shop.

After an aborted engagement with Allen Yau, Schrager was able to bring over famed Japanese chef Yuji Wakiya to create a Chinese restaurant in the hotel. Grub Street correspondent Alexandra Vallis was on the spot to see what guests thought – including, we were happy to see, none other than Benihana founder Rocky Aoki, who noted approvingly that “this is what American people want.” Did the other diners agree? ‘Aprite La Bocca,’ Says Team Behind Cacio e Pepe and Spiga

Mouth of Truth not pictured.Photo: Melissa Hom

The team that brought us Cacio e Pepe in the East Village and Spiga on the Upper West Side has expanded its Italian empire yet again, converting Gramercy’s short-lived Ora into the sleek new Bocca. Alessandro Peluso and his chef-partner Salvatore Corea serve what they call creative Roman cuisine — or at least their interpretation of it, meaning a combination of regional classics like their signature cacio e pepe pasta (ritualistically tossed in a giant wheel of Parmesan) and straccetti di manzo, ragged strips of beef, alongside innovations like shrimp with buffalo-ricotta fondue. The Roman theme is subtly echoed in the décor, which incorporates a reproduction of the city’s Mouth of Truth sculpture, along with the obligatory poster of Fellini’s Roma. And Peluso is particularly proud of the bar, where he presides over a list of Italian-inspired cocktails, like the Pimm’s No. 1–spiked Chinotto Cup. As at their first two restaurants, Corea’s savory slant toward dessert is on display in dolci like basil panna cotta with tomato coulis — a caprese salad of sorts for sweet tooths. —Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld
