The Next Generation of Chodorows Gets Busy Milking Plutocrats

zach chodorow

Zach Chodorow: getting started early.Photo: Patrick McMullan

"Page Six" today marked the beginning of a long and glorious career: Twenty-two-year-old Zach Chodorow, scion of Jeffrey, is selling $20 Kobe hot dogs to clubgoers exiting the Lily Pond, in East Hampton. Having met the lad ourselves and found him the very image of his entrepreneurial father, we're not surprise that the recent Wharton grad has already started in the family business of separating the wealthy and inebriated from their cash. In fact, Z-Chod is already talking about expanding his hot-dog-cart business to other locations.

Hamptons Restaurant Sues for Racial Persecution

The Hampton Bays Diner is suing the town of Southampton, its police department, and the SLA, based on allegations that, per court papers that Cityfile has obtained, cops “launched a series of attacks upon the plaintiffs, with the intent to prevent the plaintiffs from continuing to draw Hispanics into their restaurant, and to prevent them from doing so in the first place.” According to papers, the Diner, after it started a Hispanic Night, was raided more than once in order to drum up “trumped-up charges” that were then dismissed in court. However, it didn’t end there.

Sam Talbot Is a Hamptons Guy Now

Sam Talbot

Lodge.Photo: Patrick McMullan

Top Chef’s Sam Talbot is now the Surf Lodge’s Sam Talbot, after his restaurant fed a Don Julio summer kickoff party at the Montauk hotel this weekend. In the kitchen he was banging out appetizers like roasted figs and pulled pork piled on cucumber slices and pretzel toast, but Talbot considers the crab seviche and the scallops to be the menu's hits. “I was never a Hamptons guy until now,” said the North Carolina transplant, who lives at the hotel and plans to start surfing. “I love it. I see the water and cook all day.” But it’s hard to shake that Top Chef shadow — or is it? “I’ve had a woman come up to me and say, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry about last week,’” he said, recalling a recent night at Pastis. “And I said, ‘I don’t know you.’ And the woman said, ‘I know, we probably shouldn’t have made out last week.’ And I was like, ‘Ma’am, I don’t know who you are.’ And then she said, ‘No, no. Now you’re playing hard to get.’ And then all of a sudden she realized, ‘I don’t know who you are.’” Grub Street readers won’t be fooled so easily. —Maridel Reyes

Hamptons Primer: What’s New, What’s Back, What’s Gone

Every summer, the big names in bottle service play a game of musical chairs, scrambling to put their stamp on the few available club and restaurant spaces in the Hamptons. This year, there were rumors that Pink Elephant would lose its lease (or at least its outdoor patio) at the Capri Hotel; the future of the Star Room was uncertain; and one of Southampton’s bump-and-grind destinations, Stereo, closed their Manhattan location. But breathe easy! Our research indicates that everything turned out mostly fine. Here’s where to pop some very overpriced bubbly by way of celebration.

PM and Stereo Guys Fail Upwards in Hamptons

Thought being near the ferry was crucial to a Hamptons club’s survival? Hamptons.com reveals that Unik Ernest, of shuttered PM (and Merkato 55), is teaming up with Mike Satsky, of shuttered Stereo, to open a club, Lily Pond, that will be just a mile away from a helicopter pad. Which means that Escalades are no longer the most impressive thing you can pull up to a club in.

Down by the Hipster, meanwhile, has it that, in addition to returning to their current Southampton location, Pink Elephant partners David Sarner and Bobby Montwaid are taking over Stereo’s old space at Tavern, with Pavan and Shaun Rose as partners. Nello Said to Teach Artist a Thing or Two About Overcharging

No one is going to beat Nello at his own game.Photo: Patrick McMullan

Connoisseurs of bad art and worse restaurants will get a charge from a story in today’s Post about Nello Balan and his run-in with artist Jerome Lucani. There are so many levels of absurdity to this that it would take Nathanael West to do it justice, but let’s start with the basics: Balan, who owns restaurants catering to stodgy plutocrats, allegedly agreed to front the money for Lucani to produce hideous celebrity photomontages in exchange for a 40 percent cut on sales. Lucani claims that Balan is “keeping [his] paintings hostage” and demanded a $500,000 fee plus a 50-50 split on sales. Now that’s how you do business!

Former Roadside Wreck Home to New Hamptons BBQ

Now it only looks like it's decaying.Photo: John Capone

It has taken a little longer than expected, but Townline BBQ, the new Hamptons joint from the group that runs Nick & Toni’s, is nearly ready to open its doors. The restaurant occupies the space that housed Alison on the Beach, which had to be vacated because it was close to being condemned. (“The insurance company wouldn’t insure us anymore,” says Alison on the Beach owner Alison Becker-Hurt. “We had to move out.” This goes a long way to explaining why the town dragged its heels for so long before granting a certificate of occupancy for Townline.)

Prime 103 Does Owe a Debt — to Angelo and Maxie’s

The JL brand Just Left.Photo: John Capone

The concept for Prime 103, Ed “Jean Luc” Kleefield’s new steakhouse and lounge on the Montauk Highway, isn’t borrowed from a Miami Beach rival, despite recent accusations. Its inspiration, it turns out, is much closer to home. The real backstory, according to Kleefield, is that Angelo and Maxie’s had all but sealed a deal to buy the property and open an East End outpost of their eatery, but the offer fell apart “at the eleventh hour” only a few months ago. The JL group then figured, if Angelo and Maxie’s thought a steakhouse would work, then why not?
