Junior's Cook Orders Fifteen Lobster Tails to Go

junior's

At Junior's, like everywhere else, crime doesn't pay!Photo: Jonathan Bourland

The diabolical plan of a cook at Junior's was foiled Sunday after workers found him with fifteen lobster tails stuffed down his pants, the Post reports today. The cook, Raymundo Flores, was allegedly spotted stuffing them under bandages on his legs. What a plan! We're amazed. Did Flores think that his co-workers would believe he had come down with elephantiasis? Fifteen lobster tails is a lot of food to have in your pants. To say nothing of how cold they are. Flores was released without bail (presumably he is no flight risk with all those lobster tails in his pants) and was arraigned on charges of petit larceny and possession of stolen property. Adds the Post, laconically, “he also lost his job.”

What Might You Eat at a Brooklyn Nets* Game?

Guest of a Guest

This logo will soon rise over Atlantic Yards.Photo courtesy of The Nets

When the basketball arena opens on the Atlantic Yards site in 2010(ish), Nets fans can expect a mythic Brooklyn foodscape. "There will be counters and stands with knishes, pizza, hot dogs, egg creams, cheesecake — the goal is really to provide a distinct Brooklyn flavor," promises arena spokesman Barry Baum. Never mind that Levy Restaurants, a Chicago-based subsidiary of a British company that plies the USTA Center in Queens, is running the concessions. (Tennis fans now enjoy such traditional Flushing dishes as “Blistered Corn Soup” and “Pan-Seared Amish Chicken.”) An on-site kitchen (and separate kosher kitchen) will maintain local flavor, promises Baum. But this being a new arena in contemporary Brooklyn, you’ll also find 130 catered luxury suites and six restaurants on the concourse. Restaurant tenants won’t be named till next year, but Baum says to expect “local Brooklyn purveyors.” While we wouldn’t object to resurrecting Vera Cruz, a source close to the arena suggests the no-brainers Nathan’s and Junior’s as possible contenders. Junior’s claims ignorance about the deal. “While Junior’s would love to be in the new Nets arena, it’s too early to talk about it, because they haven't said anything to us," says Junior's spokesman Bruce Bobbins. “We’d like to be considered, but that’s up to them.” Cake Man Raven, start lobbying! —Alec Appelbaum

*Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referred to the team as the New York Nets. They will be known as the Brooklyn Nets.

Junior's cheesecake really isn't all that…Photo: Corbis

The Post returned to an evergreen feature idea today, every editor’s best friend: the “overrated” list. Since our philosophy has always been to slavishly ape the Post in every way short of peppering our posts with the phrase “tot-slay suspect,” we thought we might add a few of our own. Since the Post didn’t limit itself to specific dishes at specific restaurants, we won’t either. Here are a few things that we find ourselves less than overawed with these days.

Patsy Grimaldi's Fall From Grace

Patsy Grimaldi came out of retirement for this?Photo: Josh Ozersky

Such is our reverence for Patsy Grimaldi, the pizza patriarch behind Grimaldi’s, that when we heard word, via Slice, that he had come out of retirement to cook slices at the Aviator Sports Complex at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, we immediately began saving gas money to make the trip. The place is so remote — all the way down Flatbush Avenue, just before the Marine Parkway Bridge — that you practically need to be Hernando de Soto to find it. It’s a kid’s paradise, with two NHL-size ice rinks, indoor soccer, basketball courts, and the rest. But for the unathletic children, of course, the real draw is the food court, where you can find Schnäck burgers, cheesecake from Junior’s, Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory desserts, and, yes, Patsy’s pizza. Are those slices worth the epic journey?
