New York School Coming to East Village; Financial District Giddy Over Fresco to Go

East Village: Correction: The O.G. restaurant on East 6th Street will close on August 2, and the owner plans to reopen the space this fall as the New York School, which, we think, could be another restaurant. [Eater]
Financial District: Downtown office workers are really excited about the new Fresco to Go on Pearl Street: They were lined up around the block today for a free little taste. [Eater]
Greenwich Village: It's Cow Appreciation Day for the Chick-fil-A chain, and anyone who stops by a location in a cow costume will win — wait for it — a free Chick-fil-A meal. Sneaking into NYU dorm Weinstein is the only way to eat at the city's sole location. This could either assure or destroy your chances of a fast-food chicken today. [Ad Age via Gawker]

Harlem: Le Pain Quotidien is looking at the east side of the neighborhood, near where the Ottomanelli Brothers New York Grill will open at 1325 Fifth Avenue. [NYS via Uptown Flavor]
Tribeca: If you're concerned that Benoit's Bastille Day party on Monday won't feel so celebratory after this week's poor reviews, you could try Cercle Rouge, which will have live music, or another spot on this list of French events happening on Sunday and Monday. [Zagat Buzz]
Williamsburg: There's a cookout Saturday afternoon at the Red Shed Community Garden with $2 hot or veggie dogs and $3 burgers. [Brooklyn Life]

Beloved Pain Quotidien Waiter Murdered

We know how it is to have favorite waiters, so we were sad when a friend of Grub Street told us that one of hers, Sanjeer Seekomar of Le Pain Quotidien on 8th Street and Fifth Avenue, was killed in his apartment late last month.

Bobby Flay a Fan of Chipotle (the Restaurant, Not Just the Sauce)?

Photo: Getty Images

Earlier today, we pointed to our fashion blog’s outrage that Orlando Bloom was seen with Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr at Max Brenner, of all places. However, our combing of this week’s celebrity sightings reveals it may have been a momentary lapse, since Bloom was also spotted at the much more respectable Bobo. Phew. But what’s this — Bobby Flay filming outside of Chipotle? Is he a spokesman now? Who knows — if Rachael Ray can endorse Dunkin’ Donuts…

What's the City’s Greenest Restaurant™?

Birdbath, which doesn't need no stinking certification.Photo: Melissa Hom

Self-described “vegetarian bistro” Counter, home of the iridium martini, has become a Certified Green Restaurant™ (we’re required to put a ™ after that, or they’ll force us to drink iridium). Becoming a truly green restaurant in the eyes of the Green Restaurant Association doesn’t happen overnight, but Counter has taken the initial steps by using nontoxic chemicals, energy-efficient lighting, recycling used fryer oil, and using occupancy-sensing lights. Not all green restaurants seek the GRA’s blessing (take what might be the greenest of them all, Birdbath), but for good measure we broke the certified restaurants down according to their current ratings.

Every Friday a notable New Yorker tells us where they’ve been eating, but where are the rest of them chowing down? Starting this week we’ll sort through the gossip columns à la Ils Vont (RIP) to tell you who’s been seen where (casual sightings only — boring galas, vodka launches, and pluggy appearances don’t count). We’ll eventually compile a ranking of restaurants most often visited by celebs. Not that you care about that sort of thing! Oh, but if you do, won’t you please leave your own sightings in the comments?

Ballerina Michele Wiles Eats, Drinks, Dances More Than You

Michele Wiles

What does a dancer eat to stay in top form? In the case of Michele Wiles, principal with the American Ballet Theatre, whatever she wants. It wasn’t always so: When she attended boarding school at the age of 11, her ballet instructors kept close guard over her diet. “They made sure we weren’t eating fattening foods,” Wiles recalls. “We got weighed once a week and were told if they thought we were overweight. When I got out of that and moved to the city, I ate nothing but junk food.” So what fuels a dancer for a spate of upcoming performances?

Singer-Actress Anika Noni Rose Doesn’t Fear Ferocious Pies and Quasi-Lethal Doughnuts

“If you gave the macaroni and cheese to kindergarteners, you could use it as paste.”Photo: Melissa Hom

When Connecticut native and Tony Award–winning singer-actress Anika Noni Rose — best known for playing Lorrell in Dreamgirls — visited New York as a child, her parents took her to restaurants like the Russian Tea Room and Sign of the Dove. “I had quail there for the first time,” she recalls of the latter, “and they had a bread pudding that was out of control.” Her education in food wasn’t lost on her— even this week as she rehearsed for a benefit at Carnegie Hall and put the finishing touches on her work in the upcoming miniseries The Starter Wife, the Inwood resident made time for phenomenal comfort food, ferocious lemon-meringue pie, and a certain doughy treat that she insists is “the best thing in the world.
