Wafflegänger Haunts Wafels & Dinges Truck

Yesterday, Time Out brought news that a second truck, Dot, would be joining one-year-old Sugar in the Treat Truck fleet, and now Eater informs us that another waffle truck is on the prowl, near Astor Place. Though it’s unrelated to the Wafels & Dinges truck, it turns out it was launched by former employee Rachid Hamzaoui — much in the same way Gray’s Papaya was launched by an employee of Papaya King. Eater, of course, sees a waffle war brewing, but the owner of the Wafels & Dinges truck wants everyone to chill out: “There are not too many people in this business, and we all get along quite fine,” he tells Eater. “Just ask the folks at La Petit Abeille or Le Petit Belge (why are Belgians so into "Petit," anyways?) Of course, waffle wars would make for a juicier story, but we all try hard to disappoint you in that respect.” As long as they don’t disappoint us in the waffles department, we’re fine with that.

Belgian-Waffle Spots Are Popping Up, Eggo Style

Yesterday the magazine brought first word on Le Petit Belge, a new spot on 14th Street serving Belgian waffles. Now it seems that a Jersey manufacturer of Liège waffles, Augusten’s, will bring a truck to midtown in the next four or five weeks. According to Midtown Lunch, their prepackaged variety, already being served at Café Metro, leaves much to be desired, but as Eater revealed, they’re good enough for the Wafels and Dinges truck to use in an emergency — so we expect the fresh-made version will pull at least a few customers away from the Treats Truck.

Adam Platt, your dinner is ready.Photo: James Wojcik

In this week's issue, Adam Platt travels to Japan to see if he can eat the world's most dangerous meal. He also reviews Commerce, so he must have lived. Rob and Robin tell the story of a biryani so good that it inspired a tiny new restaurant, Sangam, on Bleecker Street. Not far away are Royal Cafe + Pastry, a new café, and Le Petite Belge, a Belgian waffles kiosk, news of which comes courtesy of the Robs. To round things out, Patti Jackson of Centovini shares her recipe for miner's-lettuce salad with pheasant eggs, and Gael Greene reviews the new Italian steakhouse Padre Figlio.
