Beatrice’s Terrace Opens in Atlantic City July 25; L.A. and Vegas May Be Next

It’s no secret that Beatrice Inn, Employees Only, and Smith and Mills owner Matt Abramcyk is poised to open a lounge on the fifth floor of the Chelsea in Atlantic City (we’ve just heard it will be called the Terrace and will officially open the weekend of July 25, after the hotel’s opening party a week prior — and there are sure to be friends-and-family festivities before then), but according to a long overdue profile in the Observer, that’s not the only thing he’s working on.

Department of Agriculture Sued Over Beef; Skip Wine Pairings in Top Restaurants

The Humane Society filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the Agriculture Department, alleging the bureau has created a legal loophole that consistently permits potentially sick cows to enter the food supply. [NYT]

The City Council’s bill to place more fruit-and-vegetable street vendors in poor neighborhoods could hurt business for grocery stores and bodegas in those neighborhoods. [NYT]

For Ilan Hall, a Taco Shack of One’s Own

Ilan Hall

It’s a far cry from helming a Ken Friedman restaurant, as he was previously rumored to be doing, but now the word, via the Gluttoness, is that former Top Chef Ilan Hall is said to be opening a taco shack in Los Angeles. We suspect, as the Gluttoness does as well, that the hire is a way to buy cheap publicity for the taco shack in question. Still, is this what being a Top Chef has come to? Somewhere, Sam Talbot must be sniggering.

RUB Bringing Barbecue to Los Angeles?

RUB Chopper

Preparing to roll over California next.Courtesy of RUB

Hill Country and the forthcoming Wildwood have been getting most of the headlines lately, but RUB seems to be the New York barbecue most likely to take over the world. The huge Vegas operation is set to open on the 15th at the Rio, and owner Andrew Fischel also has plans to open an immense RUB in Los Angeles. “It’s still something we’re in talks on, but it’s going to be big!” Fischel tells us. Of course it is. RUB is a planet eater. But will this occasion the building of a second RUB chopper? Or will L.A.'s car culture demand a RUB hot rod, possibly with a smoke-belching blower coming out of the hood? Or maybe a RUB lowrider? Fischel is mum on the possibilities, but we can’t help but dream.

Is Govind Armstrong Worried Enough About New York?

Are you sure you want to leave those sunny shores, Govind?Photo courtesy of Table 8

When top out-of-town chefs move to New York, it’s always a crapshoot. Some, like Fort Worth’s Tim Love, come in conspicuously and wash out; others, like Atlanta’s Sotohiro Kosugi, now at Soto, come in under the radar but quickly grab our attention. L.A.’s Govind Armstrong doesn’t expect much of a problem: The ultra-laid-back chef made South Beach his own and expects New York to treat him equally well. “A lot of New Yorkers come down here to Miami, and I’ve been coming up there forever, so I have a lot of friends to support me,” he tells us. “I’m not trying to reinvent the way New Yorkers eat. But I can’t not grow, you know?”

Tyson Wong Ophaso Heads for the West Coast

Don't let Suge Knight see you do that, Tyson.Photo: Shantanu Agrawal

Tyson Wong Ophaso, who you may remember as the chef at Chinatown Brasserie whom was beat up by three drunks in front of his own restaurant last year, had some good news to tell us when we ran into him the other night: Six months after leaving the Brasserie, he’s been hired as corporate chef by Domaine Restaurant Group, which owns Dakota and 25 Degrees in the Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel, as well as two Red Pearls, a kind of California version of Spice Market with “fresh, clean, and lean versions of Asian street food,” as Ophaso tells us.

Govind Armstrong Bringing His South Beach Magic North

Govind Armstrong, are you ready to cook in a real city now?Photo: Wireimage

Given that we have now exported Craft to L.A., it’s about time for L.A. to return the favor. That seems to be on the horizon: Word is that Govind Armstrong, the former Spago prodigy and current toast of South Beach, is planning to open a restaurant here in NYC. (Or so we hear from a source who is close to the Table 8 chef.) Armstrong, who began his career at 13 working for Wolfgang Puck, has told intimates that the space is all picked out and the deal almost done, but he’s not giving a location until the lease is signed, and the restaurant itself is probably nearly a year away. Still, as the chef with the distinction of having prepared the only decent meal we’ve ever eaten in South Beach (not counting Wolfie’s, of course), we have to say that our city will be richer for having him.
