No Dancing at the Annex?; Where to Get Red Velvet Cake in Park Slope

Clinton Hill: A new brick-oven pizza joint and sidewalk café called Il Porto is making progress in its efforts to open up in the next few weeks. [ClintonHillBlog]
Flatiron: Although he grew up in Mexico, Tabla's wine director, Leo Barrera, has yet to introduce any Mexican wines to the menu. [NYS]
Lower East Side: You might not be able to make any quick, rhythmic movements at the Annex, as their bid for a cabaret license was recommended for denial. [Eater]
Park Slope: Someone had the time to map out places in the nabe to find a good slice of red velvet cake. We can already feel the sugar rush. [Gowanus Lounge/Brooklynian]

Matt Levine Won’t Let You Into the Eldridge Unless You’re His Friend

the eldridge

“It’s a place that I want to keep kind of stealth.”Rendering courtesy of the Eldridge

As you might have heard, the Lower East Side has a new hidden lounge-restaurant, and even though it only has thirteen tables, it’s manned by chaperones, butlers, table attendants, and a hospitality consultant. So what exactly are all these things? Our own Jada Yuan asked owner Matt Levine, the designer of Steelo, to explain them to us and to tell us just why his new spot, the Eldridge, is going to remedy what he thinks is the staleness and lack of creativity in the current nightlife scene.

The Eldridge Peels Back Its Intimidating Façade

the eldridge

This place looks cool.Photo: Daniel Maurer

When we passed the Eldridge, the other night, the Luv 24/7 awning was off and purple and red fluorescent lightbulbs were up in its place. Intriguing! Now Guest of a Guest reveals that designer Matt Levine’s reservation-only lounge will make up for its scant seating (just thirteen tables accommodating 150 people) with all sorts of wacky amenities: butlers, chaperones, porters, table attendants, and a hospitality consultant. We’re not sure what any of that means — and we’re not sure we care about being driven home in a free Escalade (well, maybe the half of Grub Street that lives in Ditmas Park does) — but this much is exciting: The cocktails will come from the renowned Charlotte Voisey of London’s esteemed Apartment 195 as well as our own Gramercy Park Hotel. At the end of the day, however, we suspect the lounge’s success will rest firmly on whether its $650,000 Champagne wall is worth more or less than Goldbar’s wall of golden skulls.

An Inside Look at Rayuela’s New One, Macondo

macondo

Isn't she lovely?Photo: Melissa Hom.

When we told you about Macondo’s menu and its genius outdoor bar stools earlier this week, we had only a cell-phone photo to offer, but let’s face it, that doesn’t do justice to Creme Design’s handiwork. That’s why we asked our photographer Melissa Hom to go on a shooting spree — she came back with some lovely shots of fishbowl lights, iridescent-bubble-gum-and-chocolate booths, white-leather-and-pin-striped banquettes with adjustable armrests, color-changing lights, and, probably our favorite touch, the fruit baskets on the ceiling. We’ll let you discover the bathroom’s chalkboard walls for yourself — make sure to thank Grub Street when you write on them.

Location of the City’s Next ‘Exclusive and Luxurious’ Club Revealed

Fake out!Photo: Daniel Maurer

Yesterday, Guest of a Guest recapped a night of parties and caught its breath just long enough to tell us that Matt Levine, owner of Steelo Clothing, is opening a club called the Eldridge within the next couple of weeks. “We know you’ve all heard this before,” GoaG shills, “but we believe this time it’s true. The Eldridge is going to be unlike any club in New York City. The Eldridge is going to be more exclusive and luxurious than anything currently out there. It is going to raise the bar of New York nightlife. And that’s all we can say…for now.” Of course, we can tell you a little more.

Macondo’s Outdoor Stools: The Perfect Place for a Frozen Avocado-Mescal Drink!

Inside out.Photo: Daniel Maurer

Macondo, Rayuela’s new Latin-Spanish restaurant, is already buzzing after just a week in business — last night there was a fifteen-to-twenty minute wait around 9 p.m. Among the many bells and whistles Creme Design has installed in the once-drab Loside space are banquettes with arms that go up and down like car seats, and chalkboard walls in the bathroom for erasable graffiti. The seating lends itself to groups or couples who don’t mind communal tables (this will be a go-to for girls’ nights out), but the best seats in the house, you might agree, are the four sidewalk bar stools seen here. Bizarrely, your back is to Houston Street, but the people-watching inside of the restaurant compensates, and you’ve got a prime view of Junior Merino’s bartenders making haute blender drinks such as the one made with avocado, honey, agave nectar, and mescal. Check out the cocktail list and, of course, chef-partner Máximo Tejada's upscale-street-food menu (sadly, no sandwiches just yet). This is the kind of place where a Pisco sour seems like a boring thing to order.

Lower East Side appetizing stalwart Russ & Daughters has just announced plans for a blog. It seems like the kind of place that should communicate via Western Union, or better still, by neighbors yelling at each other from tenement windows, rather than the Internet. But as we've seen time and again, all you have to do to generate interest is invite the public to name something. Graveblox? Sable Modem? We’ll keep after it. Read the announcement below.

Community Board 2 postponed ruling on a liquor license for Keith McNally's new spot at 282 Bowery last night, but the restaurateur is in no rush. He plans a “slightly Italian” menu — there were brick ovens in the plans — though the concept is “still very raw,” says McNally. “But apparently it has to be a quiet restaurant.” The space, a former restaurant-supply store, likely won't open for another year and a half. As for the delay with the CB, McNally says it leaves him more time to work on Minetta Tavern. In the meantime, he'll make nice with the neighbors — he was taking down names and phone numbers after his hearing. McNally has another shot next month.

The Box Still Revels in Cocaine and Sex Toys

If you haven’t been to the Box lately, things are the same as ever there. In a LiveJournal post, a one Miss Bunnyhead Darling, after gloating that she got a $1,000 table for free, assures that MC Raven is still up to his old tricks: “Everyone in the crowd was totally fried & the MC… would periodically yell, ‘Do more coke, you fuckers!’” Simon Hammerstein, too, is still striving for crassness. In a BlackBook.com piece about Coney Island sword swallower Heather Holliday, author Jessica Pilot (she of the bagel-scooping jeremiad) writes: “Recently she performed at the Box, the exclusive Lower East Side burlesque nightclub. Asked by one of the owners if she could replace her sword with a dildo before hitting the stage, she politely declined. Heather knew better.” Incidentally we hear Hammerstein and Serge Becker are still scouring Manhattan for a building with a 10,000-square-foot basement and rooftop that they can turn into a booze-serving bathhouse. No word on whether the saunas will be outfitted with S&M gear like the bathrooms at the Box.

El Sombrero’s Painting Enters Our Museum of WTF Restaurant Art

el sombrero (the hat)

The Converse sneakers really do it.Photo: Melissa Hom

Because a restaurant’s décor is sometimes much more memorable than its food, we’ve decided to open, here on Grub Street, a virtual museum of restaurant art that will range from the genuinely disturbing to the lovably tacky to the totally ugly. Our first piece is one we’ve long admired, often in double vision, on the wall of Lower East Side standby El Sombrero: It depicts what looks to be carnival revelers (or krump dancers?) on a town square — we’ll never know for sure, since the owners didn’t want to uncover its mysteries when we called. We do know this much (because we’ve asked many times while under the influence of the place’s potent “crackaritas”): It’s not for sale. Of course, your pockets may be deeper than ours, and maybe you'd be willing to fund the necessary restoration after years of sizzling fajita smoke. We’d be saddened if the painting was snatched up next time we strolled in for a chimichanga, but we suppose it would be better than a birthday reveler accidentally putting an elbow through it, à la Steve Wynn. If you can think of similarly captivating restaurant art, leave your suggestions in the comments.

Rob Shamlian might not be the biggest fan of bloggers, after they obsessively covered his fight to open Mason Dixon, but his other restaurant, Spitzer’s Corner, is extending the olive branch to them with a Bloggers ’N’ Beer event on Monday, June 9. Internet scribes like Samuel Merritt, of Civilization of Beer, and Laren Spirer, of Gothamist, will pick their favorite items off Spitzer’s menu and pair them with their favorite beers, pontificating about the flavor combos to anyone who shells out $20. We at Grub Street were also approached to participate, but Spitzer’s doesn’t serve croquettes. Since we couldn’t have our dream duo of bock and balls, we're not going.

Earlier, we reported (via Eater) rumors that Freemans chef Jean Adamson was leaving the restaurant’s kitchen. A Freemans rep tells us that indeed she’ll be gone at the end of the summer: “Her plans are unconfirmed at this point, but will likely involve opening her own place. The search is currently under way for a replacement.” When we spoke to Adamson for a Mother’s Day feature, we were salivating over the Mormon meals her mom used to make — it wouldn’t be the worst thing if she opened a place specializing in dishes that incorporate canned creams and Frosted Flakes.

But wait — in the space that housed the Cheesesteak Factory until late last year, there’s now a new takeout and delivery spot, with a new owner, serving not just a variety of cheesesteaks (pizza, BBQ, chicken, cordon bleu, and vegetarian), but also an egg-roll cheesesteak. And you thought provolone was sacrilege. What we’re most intrigued by, however, is that the sign (as if to tempt legal fate, just as the Cheesesteak Factory did) looks remarkably similar to one of the world’s most recognizable logos.
