City Harvest Wants You to Bring Your Lunch Tomorrow

skip lunch
At Grub Street, we generally feed at our desks on cheese and peanut-butter crackers and canned soups, but for those of you accustomed to eating lunch out, City Harvest asks you to stay your hand. The charity, which feeds hungry New Yorkers, asks you to "Skip Lunch, Feed Hunger," by donating money you'd normally spend at a restaurant or deli. New York is an official sponsor of the event, which just makes too much sense not to get behind. According to City Harvest, $5 can provide four kids with lunch for a week, and given how much even crappy sandwiches cost these days, that’s not much of a sacrifice.

Midtown Machers Get Their Own Entrance to Brasserie 44

When you’re a high-powered Manhattan macher, you can’t be bothered to walk around the block: You need backdoor shortcuts along the lines of Henry Hill’s Copacabana entrance in Goodfellas. That seems to be the feeling of management at Brasserie 44, at the Royalton, whose 44th Street entrance is inconveniently a block away from their biggest customers in the media and fashion business. Owner John McDonald explains, “We have such a large client base in the media and fashion biz (conde nast, hearst, nytimes, grace building i.e. Michael Kors, Tahari, and more) that as a special VIP service they no longer have to do the long walk around the block and back through the lobby. We have stationed a door person who is at the back door from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. who greets and allows you direct access to 44.” So pay no attention to that plaque next to the door. Just say you’re here for lunch and Johnny Mack sent you.

The Little Owl Starts Lunch Service Tomorrow

the little owl

Starting tomorrow, it will be a lot easier to get into the little owl.Photo: Shanna Ravindra

The little owl has a strange position in New York — universally hailed as the perfect neighborhood restaurant, it’s one of the hardest tables to get. So chef-owner Joey Campanaro has decided to open it up for lunch. “We have to turn a lot of people away at night,” Campanaro says regretfully. “There’s always people coming in during the day, seeing if they can get in. Now they can.” The restaurant has introduced a full lunch menu, below, and while there are some new dishes on it, regulars will be pleased to know that the signature meatball slider is still there. And that getting in will be easier than at night: Only five tables will be available for lunch reservations.

The Food-Truck Revolution Rolls On — Here’s Where

There may be one beside you now.Map: Steve Motzenbecker

Grub Street was excited for Fashion Week for lots of reasons, but one of the best parts was supposed to be stalking the L.A.-launched Heartschallenger-sweets truck. So we were disappointed to learn that instead of doling out Japanese candies (or, more likely, mix tapes) to models, the rosy-pink hip-mobile is currently being boxed up for shipment to Europe. No matter. In addition to learning that the artist-musician couple who owns the brand plan to return in May (in a season-long deal with the Parks Department!), there are plenty of other trucks in this town to satisfy our food-on-wheels fancy. Here’s our rundown of the best. —Alexandra Vallis

Smith and Mills Now Open for Breakfast and Lunch

The last time you'll see this place empty?Photo: Melissa Hom

Grub Street’s offices are moving downtown next month, and as much as we’ll miss cramming into El Rincon del Sabor for strawberry sodas and stewed oxtails, we're also looking forward to after-work tipples at that equally diminutive (if somewhat hipper) eatery Smith and Mills in Tribeca. Now we can anticipate midday oysters there, too, since the drink den has just opened for breakfast and lunch. We’re already eyeing the menu hungrily, and thanks to our always up-to-the-minute database, you can too!

Developers and Insurance Salesman Get Comfort Food Near West Broadway and Chambers Street

The attorneys, lower Manhattan developers, and insurance salespeople in the micro-micro-neighborhood of West Tribeca have much more to choose from than the nearby celebrity-chef flagships — home-style international bites, in particular. But for a business lunch, they’re still best off at Bouley.
