Health-Food Logos Get a Makeover

pump energy food and tasti d-lite logos

Two local chains are freshening up their looks with new logos. A press release informs us that Adam Eskin, the new CEO at ten-year-old muscle-head favorite Pump Energy Food, will unveil a new aesthetic with the opening of its sixth midtown location, at 275 Madison Avenue (at 40th Street), on June 30. Former Chipotle branding exec Dan Fogarty came up with the logo you see here, designer Garrett Singer (also of Hill Country) worked on the store's interior, and the sprawling menu will be abbreviated (no word on whether “nature burgers” or “protein muffins” will get the axe). Meanwhile, Serious Eats tells us that Tasti D-Lite has come up with a slick new logo in an attempt to look as cool as Pinkberry. But will it be able to hold a candle to Yoberry?

Greg Briar Will Open Another Aspen in Vikram Chatwal’s 212 Hotel

aspen

Aspen, the original.Photo: Yun Cee Ng

Now that Highbar is, um, off the ground (Down by the Hipster checked it out yesterday), Greg Briar (also owner of Amalia) tells us that by Labor Day weekend he’ll open a second outpost of his restaurant Aspen in Vikram Chatwal’s 212 Hotel. Briar says the dining room, designed by the increasingly ubiquitous-again Steve Lewis, will pair aspen trees with mirrored walls to create the illusion of a forest and that “mandelier” artist Jason Miller is installing his notorious antler chandeliers in a 30-by-30-foot dome over the tables. As with Aspen, there will be nods to Hunter S. Thompson and the sort of “world-class loungey-type D.J.'s,” per Briar, that HST probably would’ve scared off with a bullhorn. Also carrying over from the original location are the bison sliders (plus Kobe beef and Black Angus sliders!) and the tacos and quesadillas. No telling how many more Aspens are in the works, but Briar says that he’s planning to launch Highbars in India, London, and then maybe he'll set the controls for the heart of the sun.

We don’t usually cover private-event spaces, but when the space that used to house the Supper Club, in the Edison Hotel, reopened for Chef’s Night Out (after the James Beard Media Awards) last Friday, there was so much nostalgia in the air that we thought we’d give you a look at its new incarnation.

Krispy Kreme Gives Commuters a Free Sugar Hit

Krispy Kreme is declaring tomorrow National Doughnut Day and offering one freebie per customer at its Penn Station location (you may recall the Chelsea and Upper East Side locations closed). If you think that’s something to balk at, consider the folks in Tokyo who waited in line for an hour to get their hands on some sweet, sweet Krispy Kreme goodness. Then again, if you want to avoid such lines and celebrate National Doughnut Day in a more dignified fashion, try the Verona chocolate doughnut at Balthazar Bakery — it won’t be free, but rest assured it’s worth every penny.

Brooklyn Not Good Enough for Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center is in Manhattan, thank you.Photo: Getty Images

Brooklyn has been dissed yet again, this time by Rockefeller Center. Gael Greene reports on Insatiable Critic that Shelly Fireman wanted to put a Brooklyn Diner in the space that used to house Tuscan Square. The only problem was that Tishman-Speyer, who manages the property, considered the Brooklyn Diner to be too downscale! “Would you be willing to give up using Brooklyn in the name?” Fireman was asked. (We guess it couldn't match the Battlestar Galactica "Frak Off" shirts in the NBC store for class.) In Dubai, apparently, they’re not so squeamish; Greene reports that a Brooklyn Diner franchise is ready to go at the Vegas of the Middle East.

Purse Snatcher Strikes Terror in Heart of Times Square Diners

We’ve poked fun at Bar Carrera’s intrusive “beware of pickpockets” signage, but the Post reminds us they do exist: A “well-dressed, well-coiffed daytime purse-snatcher” (a.k.a. the “dapper dipper”) has pinched purses off the chairs of Times Square restaurants such as Red Lobster, Spanky’s BBQ, and the Hard Rock Café. He’s struck so many times that cops consider him a “one-man army,” so keep an eye out next time you’re deep into that bottomless margarita.

New Incarnation of La Fonda Del Sol Is on the Way

La Fonda Del Sol, a new Latin restaurant in the Met Life building, will open this fall, reports Gael Greene at Insatiable Critic. The original La Fonda Del Sol was one of first big theme restaurants engineered by Joe Baum in the early sixties, along with such classics of kitsch as the Forum of the Twelve Caesars and Zum Zum. (For a quick refresher on Baum's genius, check out this tribute from the Times' archives.) The current version, reports Greene, comes by way of the Patina Group (the Sea Grill, Brasserie, Nick and Stef's) and will be designed by Adam Tihany.

A First Look at Eden and Opera, Opening June 3

Eden

Heavenly.Photo: Melissa Hom

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and what better way to ring it in than with — oh, yes — another rooftop bar? Here you have images from last night's opening party at Eden, the open-air boite atop Opera (formerly known as China Club). Owner Danny Freed tells us that the guys from 1Oak may still have a hand in the place, though their rep previously told us otherwise. Either way, feast your eyes on the spot, and maybe hit it up soon (it will be open next Thursday and then from Tuesdays through Saturdays starting June 3). When we see you on Tuesday let’s hope we’re all a shade more tan, a little fatter, and a couple of winks better rested.

Eden Opens This Thursday, Without 1 Oak Team

According to Steve Lewis’s blog, the guys from 1 Oak won’t be doing the rooftop at Opera (formerly China Club) as he previously reported. A rep tells us there was a conversation, but never a contract, and that Richie Akiva et al aren’t currently looking for other rooftops, although Uncle Steve seems to have heard differently. Either way, Eden opens this Thursday at 5 p.m., with an hour of free vodka if you RSVP to val@joonbug.com. An excuse to cut out of work early if ever we heard one.

The Vongerichtification of the China Club was a long time coming, and today Steve Lewis reveals that none other than the team from 1 Oak will be behind the indoor-outdoor rooftop named Eden. (The interview says it opens tonight, May 15, but the club tells us more like next week.) It’ll cater to the “chic elite” (as opposed to the shabby elite) and is “designed for bottle service.” As for the rest of the club, it’s a little confusing — the names Crest, Opera, and Opera at the Crest are bandied about to refer to the independently run lounges within the club (there will also be live shows), but somehow we’re guessing Eden is the name that will end up on people’s lips.

Cesare Casella Has Things Going on All Over Town

Cesare Casella, everywhere you look.Photo: Patrick McMullan

There’s been a lot of action in the Cesare Casella camp lately. The chef gives us an update. To wit:

Maremma is for sale. “It’s on the market,” Casella says. “I’m waiting for a better offer than the one I have, though. If I don’t get it, I’ll renovate it and make it a little different.”

• Casella’s new restaurant will be called Salumeria Rosi, but it isn’t really a restaurant, per se: “It’s a grocery, that has a very small restaurant area of about 35 seats. It’s very casual — some antipasti, panini, a few pastas.”

• The Tuscan Tocque also tells us that he’s in negotiations to do a big, upscale restaurant in a luxe hotel being built in midtown. “We haven’t signed the contract yet, but it will be a very nice restaurant, and a kind of cooking I haven’t done before in New York.”

• Bean bar, Casella’s planned fast-food operation in Grand Central Station, is likewise on hold. Casella probably has ten other things going on that he's not talking about; but we'll settle for these. They're more than enough.

We're told by several sources close to Lever House that a leading candidate has emerged for the chef job in Bradford Thompson, of Mary Elaine's at the Phoenician resort in Arizona. Thompson, a Daniel alumni, won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2006, and was one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs two years earlier. Besides being a major force in the kitchen, Thompson also loves New York — he creates elaborate gourmet tailgates as he follows the Giants from as far away as Scottsdale. Ownership tells us that there are other candidates still being interviewed, but if Thompson is announced as the restaurant's new chef, don't be too surprised.

Belgian-Waffle Spots Are Popping Up, Eggo Style

Yesterday the magazine brought first word on Le Petit Belge, a new spot on 14th Street serving Belgian waffles. Now it seems that a Jersey manufacturer of Liège waffles, Augusten’s, will bring a truck to midtown in the next four or five weeks. According to Midtown Lunch, their prepackaged variety, already being served at Café Metro, leaves much to be desired, but as Eater revealed, they’re good enough for the Wafels and Dinges truck to use in an emergency — so we expect the fresh-made version will pull at least a few customers away from the Treats Truck.

When you’re a high-powered Manhattan macher, you can’t be bothered to walk around the block: You need backdoor shortcuts along the lines of Henry Hill’s Copacabana entrance in Goodfellas. That seems to be the feeling of management at Brasserie 44, at the Royalton, whose 44th Street entrance is inconveniently a block away from their biggest customers in the media and fashion business. Owner John McDonald explains, “We have such a large client base in the media and fashion biz (conde nast, hearst, nytimes, grace building i.e. Michael Kors, Tahari, and more) that as a special VIP service they no longer have to do the long walk around the block and back through the lobby. We have stationed a door person who is at the back door from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. who greets and allows you direct access to 44.” So pay no attention to that plaque next to the door. Just say you’re here for lunch and Johnny Mack sent you.

The demand for midtown restaurant space seems to be greater than we thought: A Realtor has actually taken out an ad on Gael Greene’s Website, putting out a $5,000 bounty for a tip leading to a good location. “Our posse has been hunting for a sizable midtown restaurant location for a while for now,” Jon-Bentley Wiggins, of Kamenitzer Real Estate Group, explains. “[It’s] time to get the townsfolk involved.” Apparently, neither a recession, nor zooming food costs, nor even the astronomical cost of real estate is enough to slow the restaurant juggernaut down. Or, if it is, don't let that get in the way of your finder's fee, should you know about something.

And the Winner in the Patsy’s-vs.-Patsy’s Suit Is … Patsy’s

In case you haven't been following the case, two stalwarts of the red-sauce scene have been going at it hammer and tongs for the right to the Patsy's name. In one corner was the franchised pizzeria, originating in East Harlem; in the other, the midtown eatery where Frank Sinatra used to go to eat his veal cutlets. Well, the jury released its verdict yesterday … and nobody knows what the hell it means. According to the story in the New York Post, pizza Patsy's had the name first, but midtown Patsy's is hurt by the use of the name. But nobody has to do anything until another ruling in August. Color us confused. The only comment in the whole story that makes any sense comes from a customer at the midtown Patsy's: "The other place may have the name, but not the meatballs." Amen.

City Burger Debuts Today in Midtown

New York’s hamburger wars, already intense, open on a new front today: City Burger on Broadway and 39th Street. This spot will be the first of a mini-chain, say the owners, the Abitino family of chain pizza fame. The Abitinos want to open at least two other locations this year and are considering the New York Times building, the Newark airport, and downtown Brooklyn. The six-ounce burgers are made, as at Shake Shack, Market Table, the Spotted Pig, and other top New York burger spots, from Pat La Frieda meat, and come on an egg bun. “A lot of people are going into burgers,” owner Dominick Abitino admits. “That’s the new concept. That’s what’s hot right now. We’ve been in the pizza business for a long time and wanted to try something different.”

Tony May to Make San Domenico Bigger and Less ‘Stuffy’

We were able to reach San Domenico’s Tony May and ask him why he would move one of the city’s most-stable restaurant operations. May was very candid with us. “Everybody takes us for granted,” he says. “Everybody thinks we’re a little stuffy. So we want to move forward and put ourselves in a more contemporary environment and serve Italian cuisine in a way contemporary diners want it.” As for the proximate cause of the move, May was open about that too. “They say the life of a restaurant is its lease and ours was up. We need something bigger, and we’re getting it. The truth is that we need to do a much higher volume if we are going to pay the rents landlords want today as well as the other costs of doing business.” May promises Grub Street he'll let us know the new location of San Domenico once the lease is signed, which he expects to happen shortly. Adds Marisa May, Tony's daughter, “San Domenico will be around forever, but now we are moving forward into the 21st century.”

What to Order at Mia Dona

Mia Dona, just before they opened the doors.Photo courtesy Mia Dona

Mia Dona, Donatella Arpaia and Michael Psilakis’s new restaurant is open and busy, though still BYOB. We previewed the food in our video, but the menu turns out to be larger and significantly cheaper than expected. The gnudi with truffle-butter sauce, mushrooms, and crispy speck that was so popular at the old Dona is back, one of only two survivors from the old menu. Mia Dona skews Italian more than the old Dona did, but there are a number of Greco-Psilakisian numbers on it, as well, especially a grilled octopus with olives, Feta, and anchovy vinaigrette. The bar menu, meanwhile, is completely separate and includes a burger (as seen on our video), a pork belly BLT, and crispy baccalà that is the only other Dona holdover. Check out the dinner menu, part of our ever-expanding database, for yourself.

Clubland’s Toughest Door Is in, Um, Times Square?

Clubs have long vied for celeb-studded Tuesday nights, so what’s the hottest one going these days? By one account, it’s Spotlight Live??? We were tempted to dismiss the Times Square karaoke complex as “strictly for the tourists” when it first opened, but that changed when we heard hip-hop stars were in the house during the recent Monday morning when a knife fight broke out. According to MTV.com, Beyoncé, Mya, Fantasia, Ne-Yo, and others have taken the stage for Tuesday’s “R&B Live” night. This week, when Diddy hosted a Bad Boy showcase, Fat Joe, Ray J, and Missy Elliott were in the audience, and Naughty by Nature and Danity Kane performed. We called the club looking to get in on the action, but were told it was a private event put on by an entertainment group affiliated with Universal Records. In other words, that door is tight.
