City Burger Not Feeling the Love From City Burger-Eaters

Despite great raw materials and a reservoir of goodwill, City Burger has opened to a chorus of catcalls from the burger-eating public, Midtown Lunch tells us today. We’re not surprised: Despite their use of La Frieda burger meat, the proprietors' backgrounds are in pizza. It’s no easy thing to build a great burger; just ask the legion of chains that have been buried over the years by public indifference. (Lesson one: If you have a juicy, delicious burger blend, try not cooking it until it turns into a hockey puck.) The final word, both literally and figuratively, is given by a Midtown Lunch commenter: “When I went, they could not even figure out how to cook a medium-rare burger for the ONLY customer in the restaurant. I dunno about you, but that’s just uncool.”

Free Nice Lunch in Midtown; You Can Dance If You Want to at Sway

East Village: Song 7.2 took only five days to open in the American Grill space. Other restaurants should take a cue from them: Just change "signage in the window, implant a new menu and a new chef, and doneski." [Eater] A Japanese restaruant near 13th Street and Avenue A is collecting signatures for a liquor license and considering taking the name F-U. That should be a fun community-board meeting. Flushing: At Indian markets, including New Subzi Mandi at 43-53 Main Street, you can find masala-flavored Cheetos called Kurkure, which may include a recipe "created by the Fab Four, a 'trendy Punjabi family.'" [Gothamist]
Midtown East: The Volstead, which is usually viewed as a bar, is offering Midtown Lunch readers free lunch every Tuesday in May to promote its new menu of sandwiches (including a lobster roll), salads, and sliders. You can even reserve a spot to eat for free. [Midtown Lunch]
Soho: Tiny dance club Sway is one of the few bars with a legit cabaret license. [Down by the Hipster]
Union Square: The former Steak Frites space has been transformed into Café Society, which serves pricey "fare ranging from sushi to spareribs." [Zagat Buzz]

Indian Buffet Pulls a Fiamma, Raises Prices in Midtown

It's not just on the highest plane of fine dining that critics, customers, and restaurants wage their unceasing war against each other: The same drama, played out in miniature, occurs everywhere. For evidence, look no further than Zach Brooks's encounter, on Midtown Lunch, with Spice Fusion, an all-you-can-eat Indian buffet that raised its price $1 after the blogger praised it. Yes, it's the Fiamma saga all over again, but we'll have to see how this plays out. Will Spice Fusion's corporate parent issue a press release vowing to lower prices? Or will the guy who hands out flyers on 48th Street just continue to thrust them wordlessly into the hands of passersby? Only Midtown Lunch will know.

Crosby Connection Will Rise Again; Los Dados the Last Breath of Meatpacking

Meatpacking District: With the wave of recent restaurant and nightlife closings, this area seems doomed, but Los Dados and long-delayed Merkato 55 might be able to salvage the hip destination, at least "on its western perimeter." [Zagat]
Midtown East: Midtown Lunch finagled a sneak peak of Sakae Sushi’s conveyor belt and loses his cool: "If you’ve been to an outlet overseas, you may end up disappointed by the first US location which lacks some of the uniqueness or ‘cool’ factor of the locations in Asia. That’s because they felt a more subdued location would be more appealing to the clientele of Midtown.… Even when we get something cool, we get screwed." [Midtown Lunch]
Park Slope: Lebanese Laila has closed, which doesn’t seem like a surprise since it was across the street from "the better, cheaper Olive Vine." [TONY]

Dave Pasternack Serves Fancy Food But Prefers Not to Eat It

Today over at Midtown Lunch, Dave Pasternack, the chef and co-creator of Mario Batali’s highbrow fishery Esca, sits down for a quickie profile. There’s nothing particularly revelatory (that angle was more than covered in a lengthy New Yorker profile from 2005), but we just couldn’t wrap our heads around one little thing:
Favorite Kind of Food: I mean, I like everything — but my favorite is ethnic food. I find it more intriguing. I’ve worked in fancy restaurants for 25 years, but my favorite foods are still Chinese, Thai, Indian … pretty much everything.
