Kobayashi’s Presence at Hot-Dog-Eating Contest Makes Waves

Gersh Kuntzman, the former New York Post columnist now editing The Brooklyn Paper, is up in arms about this weekend's Nathan's hot-dog-eating contest. Takeru Kobayashi, the six-time champion and global face of the sport, is competing without having won a regional qualifier. “I think the whole thing stinks,” Kuntzman writes. It's not just that Kobayashi is being given a technical pass, in recognition of his universally-admitted status as a contender. The Tsunami, as he's called, hasn't done any competitive eating since October, and still suffers from the so-called "jawthritis" that has crippled his career. We don't agree with Kuntzman. A Nathan's contest without Kobayashi would be like a Mermaid Parade with fully-dressed women, or a Nathan's that only serves soy dogs. Sick or well, contending or not, America needs Kobayahsi — if only so current champion Joey Chestnut can wallop him again.

Harlem: A benefit on Father's Day called Real Men Cook will host "celebrity cooks and tasters" and include plenty of food. [Uptown Flavor]
Upper West Side: The Aix space will have a new design and serve "seasonal American small plates and shareable entrées in the Stanton Social–style of eating." [Strong Buzz]

What Might You Eat at a Brooklyn Nets* Game?

Guest of a Guest

This logo will soon rise over Atlantic Yards.Photo courtesy of The Nets

When the basketball arena opens on the Atlantic Yards site in 2010(ish), Nets fans can expect a mythic Brooklyn foodscape. "There will be counters and stands with knishes, pizza, hot dogs, egg creams, cheesecake — the goal is really to provide a distinct Brooklyn flavor," promises arena spokesman Barry Baum. Never mind that Levy Restaurants, a Chicago-based subsidiary of a British company that plies the USTA Center in Queens, is running the concessions. (Tennis fans now enjoy such traditional Flushing dishes as “Blistered Corn Soup” and “Pan-Seared Amish Chicken.”) An on-site kitchen (and separate kosher kitchen) will maintain local flavor, promises Baum. But this being a new arena in contemporary Brooklyn, you’ll also find 130 catered luxury suites and six restaurants on the concourse. Restaurant tenants won’t be named till next year, but Baum says to expect “local Brooklyn purveyors.” While we wouldn’t object to resurrecting Vera Cruz, a source close to the arena suggests the no-brainers Nathan’s and Junior’s as possible contenders. Junior’s claims ignorance about the deal. “While Junior’s would love to be in the new Nets arena, it’s too early to talk about it, because they haven't said anything to us," says Junior's spokesman Bruce Bobbins. “We’d like to be considered, but that’s up to them.” Cake Man Raven, start lobbying! —Alec Appelbaum

*Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referred to the team as the New York Nets. They will be known as the Brooklyn Nets.

Coney Island: Not all attendees of Nathan’s hot-dog binge yesterday were there to bask in the gluttony of the contest; costumed protesters encouraged meat eaters to “Give Peas a Chance.” [Gowanus Lounge]
Flatiron: Pixar’s latest film got you hungry? Borough Food & Drink is among the city’s restaurants now serving ratatouille, and its version is topped with cheese from Joe’s Dairy. [NYDN]

Nobu Coming to the Hamptons; AMA Gets Behind Calorie-Posting Law

On some summer weekends, Nobu will be setting up a satellite location in the Hamptons – presumably near Howard Stern’s place. [NYP]

The American Medical Association gets behind the city’s requirement that fast-food chains post calorie and other nutritional information on their menus. Not that the chains have any intention of complying. [Nation's Restaurant News]

Ratatouille is being hailed as an instant classic, especially for foodies: “The food is drawn and imagined so beautifully (with the help of French Laundry chef Thomas Keller, who consulted on the movie) that you walk out wishing you'd made reservations at Per Se.” [Slate]

Hot-Dog-Eating Champ Struck With Jaw Arthritis Determined to Gulp On

When was the last time you remember seeing the belt, Kobayashi?Photo courtesy Major League Eating

The 2007 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest should have been one for the ages – the Ali-Foreman of competitive eating. After an uninterrupted six-year run, Japan’s Takeru Kobayashi was about to meet his match in American Joey Chestnut, who broke “The Tsunami”’s world record earlier this month in Phoenix. But as you may know, Kobayashi came down with jaw arthritis and can barely open his mouth — and, to make matters worse, the trophy the two nations are jousting for, the Mustard Yellow Belt, has been lost.

Sbarro Disappears Into the Corporate Maw

Don't you just love man in uniform, stuffing his face?Photo: Mark Peterson/Corbis

Given how generic and fast food–y Sbarro is, news that the Long Island–based chain was just bought by a private-equity firm probably isn't breaking too many hearts. But believe it or not, the Sbarro family has owned and operated the business for the last 50 years; it now joins Nathan's, Blimpie's, Carvel, and a growing number of other New York–area businesses run as franchise "brands" from a central office. At this rate, we could be seeing Carnegie Delis and Momofukus in food courts across the country. Or perhaps we're just lapsing into fantasy again.
