Drinks Are on the House If You Name Galapagos 2.0

Any bright ideas?Photo: Gothamist

Kosher Village, which has its falafel giveaway tomorrow, apparently inspired the new owner of the soon-to-reopen Galapagos space in Williamsburg. According to Gothamist, Matthew Roff (who also owns Southpaw and Franklin Park, the new beer garden near the Brooklyn Museum) will award a $1,000 bar tab to the person who comes up with a snappy name for his performance and drinking venue. We wonder how many entrants will tell him to serve sliders and call it WilliamsBurger.

PM and Stereo Guys Fail Upwards in Hamptons

Thought being near the ferry was crucial to a Hamptons club’s survival? Hamptons.com reveals that Unik Ernest, of shuttered PM (and Merkato 55), is teaming up with Mike Satsky, of shuttered Stereo, to open a club, Lily Pond, that will be just a mile away from a helicopter pad. Which means that Escalades are no longer the most impressive thing you can pull up to a club in.

Santos' Party House Actually Houses a Party

santas sign

This means you.Jason Wishnow

We got late word yesterday that Andrew W.K.’s club Santa’s Party House a.k.a. 100 Lafayette a.k.a. (and ultimately named) Santos’ Party House was soft-opening with a party featuring D.J.'s Lee Douglas, Alex from Tokyo, and Spun. We won’t share whatever video footage we may have taken because as you can see here, absolutely no photography is allowed, but know this: Though the downstairs isn’t quite as spacious as we had imagined it after three years of construction (décor equals disco balls), it’s a long overdue throwback to the days of bare-bones box clubs (think Shelter at Hubert Street), and a godsend for anyone who has ever danced in the basement of 205 thinking the experience could benefit from a little more space and a much sicker sound system. Drinks at the basic bar were $8. D.J.'s casing the joint last night included Prince Language, Tommie Sunshine, and A Touch of Class— expect the nightly lineup to follow suit. The upstairs, according to A.W.K. himself, is opening soon — till then it’s time to shut up and dance.

Santa's or Santos'?Photo: Melissa Hom

Amy Sacco may have told the Daily News that our nightlife is overrated, but at least some new venues are in the works. Steve Lewis, after a lot of waxing nostalgic about the Tunnel (a party was held in the club’s former space, which now houses a, um, ’wichcraft), tells us that his old spot Life, at 158 Bleecker and Thompson, will soon become “a burlesqueish performance spot.” According to its MySpace page, (Le) Poisson Rouge will open by June 15, when sadcore duo Damon and Naomi have a show (others on the schedule include jazz greats Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden).

Alcohol Advertising Gets Edgier, Just Plain Weirder

Luxury cachaça brand Cabana has kicked off a new ad campaign, shot by photographer Mario Sorrenti, that seems more than anything to be a nod to Brazil’s $100 million adult-film industry. It puts Terry Richardson’s Belvedere ads to shame and is about as unsafe for work as mixing batidas de coco at your cubicle. Personally, however, we’re much more impressed with Absolut for commissioning out-there comedians Tim & Eric and Zach Galifianakis to do a movie, the second part of which hit the Internet last week. The send-up of friends boozing on the beach is “absolut hilarity.” There's a certain, um, ribald moment, but outright nudity, thankfully, is minimal.

LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy Aboard at 100 Lafayette

Like Andrew WK’s new party pad wouldn’t have a killer music program? LCD Soundsystem front man, James Murphy, reveals on his label's message board that he’ll be doing a little something there called Special Disco Version. We have no idea what else will be going on at 100 Lafayette, because AWK and his partner, Spencer Sweeney, are forgoing interviews about the venue (per a mass e-mail), but this is for certain: When it opens (still no announced date) and the kids hit the streets after last call, nearby-ish Bun is going to be very happy it decided to start serving food at all hours.

A First Look at Highbar, Midtown's Newest Rooftop

highbar

Let's get high.Photo: Melissa Hom

Feast your eyes on Highbar — when it opens, during the third week of May, it’ll be competing with recently opened Pooldeck for the city’s rooftop revelers. As you’ve known since last year, this is the new one from Greg Brier of Aspen, D’Or, and Amalia. The food program has been scaled down since Ivy Stark was slated to barbecue — now you’ll find what’s being described as simply backyard-grill food such as hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as crudités — and the emphasis is on drinks such as the Wicket, a simple mix of gin and cucumber purée. A floor below the rooftop that you see here (that bizarre orb is a UFO chair designed by Asobi — ICrave did the rest of the place), there will be a loftlike room with floor-to-ceiling windows and banquettes and another full bar. One thing: There’s no pool. But who’s to say you can’t BYO inflatable one?

Down by the Hipster today points out that Beatrice, long known to downtown denizens as “the one place where you can smoke and dance!,” has put up signs asking patrons to kindly refrain from doing either. So where can you dance? Until now a list of Manhattan’s cabaret licenses hasn’t been available online, but we’ve acquired one from the Department of Consumer Affairs so you can do the all-the-rage tektonik without the cops busting your wildly jiggling ass.

It's Time to Party at Andrew W.K.'s Place

Now a collector's item.Photo: Melissa Hom

A while back we shared the unsettling news that rocker Andrew W.K.’s years-in-the-works performance/party venue, at one point called Santa’s but now called simply 100 Lafayette (after its location near Walker Street in Tribeca), had its liquor-license application rejected after initially having it approved in 2006. But we knew the man who said “when it’s time to party, we will party hard” wouldn’t fail us: The SLA’s site indicates that a license has finally been granted. We’ve heard that the venue will hold private parties as soon as this week. It’s enough to make us join A.W.K. in a chorus of “I Love New York City.”

In Last Call at Elaine’s, Brian McDonald recalls his time as a recovering alcoholic, tending bar at the glamorous Upper East Side saloon-cum-salon from 1986 to 1997. McDonald left Elaine’s in the most heroic of ways, after a publication party there for his first book. However, it’s clear from his memoir that Elaine Kaufman, the firebrand who still runs her eponymous restaurant after celebrating its 45th anniversary this month, had a great deal of influence on his second career. We asked him about his time with her and what she thought of his tell-all.

This weekend, meatpacking club Tenjune will be an after-party spot for movies being shown at the Tribeca Film Festival. One person who knows to expect guests like Mariah Carey, John Cusack, and Hilary Duff is doorman Aalex Julian. Over the course of a few years, he worked the doors at Cain, Pink Elephant, Home, and Guest House before being brought on by Eugene Remm and Mark Birnbaum to open Tenjune. He tells us he’s one of maybe four doormen in the city who are in a position to negotiate their compensation (he gets a shift pay per night in addition to a percentage of table revenue) — part of the reason he’s now been manning the club’s doors for nearly two years.

Ahead of its grand opening tomorrow, we stopped into the Habitat, a little nook in Greenpoint that pretty much resembles the interior of a Big Buck Hunter lodge. The bar was built from scratch (witness construction shots on its Website) using wood from Maine and from Williamsburg's own Moon River Chattle. The conversation piece: a German cuckoo clock! The happy hour, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., features a $9 sangria-and-empanada special (beef or Cuban), $4 macaroni and cheese, and a two-for-one on select beers (among the dozen drafts, normally $6, are Coney Island Lager, Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold, Reissdorf Kolsch, and Mother’s Milk Stout).

Sagatiba's Aged Cachaça Hitting States in Fall

cachaca

Crack open a cold one.Photo: Daniel Maurer

Last week, the Pour pointed out that aged varieties of cachaça — the Brazilian sugarcane liquor you know and love from the caipirinha — are hitting the market. But how much distribution can small producers get? We’ve just discovered that a bullish brand we love for its relative smoothness, Sagatiba, will introduce a cachaça called Velha here in the fall. It will only be aged two years in oak barrels, instead of a dozen, but it’ll beat this cachaça in a can (slogan: “A good idea”) that a friend recently brought back from Brazil. Wait — hard liquor in a can? We take that back.

In the magazine this week, maple syrup was a key ingredient in the "In Season" recipe. Don Lee of PDT may use maple syrup to make his old-fashioned, but we couldn't get past the bacon-infused bourbon that is the base of the drink. Bacon? Bourbon? We're in. And since we took our camera to PDT yesterday to watch Lee prepare the drink himself, we can all practice at home. Frequently.

BlackBook points out that Belvedere, ever on the lookout for ways to hook the cool kids (you’ll remember the series of ads with Ken Friedman, Daniel Boulud, the Tenjune team, and others), has launched a Website that allows you to send a “drink code” to a friends’ phone or e-mail that they can redeem for free vodka. It’s kind of genius — this way you can buy your favorite boozehounds a birthday drink (or a bottle, if you’re feeling generous) without having to be at the obnoxious bar where they're throwing their party. Indeed, most of the participating venues are places you wouldn’t send your worst enemy (Señor Swanky’s? Wicked Willy’s?). Let’s hope Belvedere’s marketing people get with it and add to the few standouts like Devin Tavern and Dylan Prime.

Tenjune Owners Predict the Meatpacking District's Demise

Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm

Steve Lewis’s blog continues to offer depressing snapshots of contemporary nightlife: In an interview in which Tenjune owners Eugene Remm and Mark Birnbaum try to explain why you should blow $5,000 dollars to sit at one of their tables, they tell anyone who isn’t a corporate type like them to forget about opening a club these days. Birnbaum shrugs off a feud with Stereo’s Mike Satsky (Birnbaum: “how silly is it when someone goes out of their way for no apparent reason to make an enemy out of you, because now instead of referring business to someone…”) and seems to slag on Lotus, the club that Tenjune will be joint-venturing with: “Lotus is still busy because they’re all tourists to be honest.” The real eye-opener, however, is that the guys, who say that hotels are their next area of conquest, seem to have all but given up on the meatpacking district.

Encouraging news about Bowery Electric, the bar that’s poised to hold down the rock-and-roll fort amid the more upscale boîtes that are coming to the Bowery (not to mention CBGB’s future role as a John Varvatos store next month): We’ve learned that in addition to Mike Stuto of HiFi (and Brownies before that), it’s owned by Jesse Malin and Johnny T of Niagara and Black and White (and in Malin's case, Coney Island High before those), which is a hell of a pedigree. Right now the bar is the picture of simplicity, and, given the gatekeepers, we suspect it’ll stay that way.

Bowery Electric, HiFi's New Bar, Opens in Remote Lounge Space

Bowery Electric, the new rock bar from the owner of HiFi, has quietly opened in the former Remote Lounge space (the official opening is next Wednesday). It’s a simple affair à la Midway, R Bar, and others, dimly lit by Edison bulbs: Horsehair-type stools at a long bar in the front room (eight beers on tap) and some tables in the boxy back room, where of course Remote Louge’s surveillance stations used to be. The basement is apparently still being renovated, and the bouncer told us there will also be a second floor. We hope by Wednesday that disconcerting “new bar smell” will have faded into an odor more apt for Rolling Stones, Van Halen, and AC/DC.

Confirmed: Passerby Will Close This Month

Earlier, we reported a rumor that Passerby is closing this next Saturday. We’ve now received word from owner Toby Cecchini, whose book Cosmopolitan chronicles a day in the life of the bar, that the last night will actually be March 29, though it will probably be a private affair. Although Cecchini still has seven years left on the lease, he says his landlord is prying him out under a “demolition clause,” since he’s demolishing the building in order to convert another building down the block to condos. Cecchini doesn’t have plans or a space for a new bar yet, and, even if he did, he says, “It could take me a year and a half. What I really want is the bar I’ve nurtured for the last ten years, and that ain’t gonna happen.” It’s undetermined whether patrons will be allowed to pour one out on the bar’s light-up dance floor.

Rumor has it that the demise of Passerby is imminent. Former resident D.J. Of course, he might just be trying to make sure the tiny bar doesn’t get overrun, which is why we suggest you pay your respects during the week and leave the weekend to those who know what “Pussy Juice” is (don’t ask).
