PETA Wants Frankenmeat; Ramsay Loves Fast Food

• PETA is getting involved in the Frankenmeat debate by offering a $1 million to the “first person to come up with a method to produce commercially viable quantities of in vitro meat at competitive prices by 2012.” Yeah, good luck with that. [NYT]

Calorie Law Doomed?; Colicchio Hasn't Been to Ko Either

• The very study that was used by the Health Department to crusade for mandatory calorie posting in food chains may now be used by defense lawyers to undermine the law’s future. [NYS]

• Some Lower East Siders are not stoked about Bruce Willis opening the Bowery Wine Company, so they’re going to buy a pig, name it Bruce, and then eat it. [NYP]

• Wine bars are everywhere, and, thankfully, they’re a lot less stuffy than they used to be. [NYT]

If You’re Drinking at Applebee’s, Calories Are the Least of Your Problems

The law requiring calorie counts on chain-restaurant menus goes into effect on Monday (the New York Restaurant Association is suing the Health Department in the meantime), and it applies to bars, too! According to the Post, almost none of the bartenders at Applebee's, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Hard Rock Café, Olive Garden and T.G.I. Friday's had a clue that drink menus were supposed to have calorie info. Since the city announced that they won’t be levying fines until May, no one is too worried about it. A Bubba Gump server shrugged off the information entirely: “I don't think it would help us. We're not exactly a low-calorie restaurant, which is why I don't eat here.”

Last week Todd Barry told us he was a Chipotle man and we noted that a couple of respected chefs were too — but it seems Ethan Hawke, for one, prefers naked burritos to burrito bols, if a recent sighting at Qdoba Mexican Grill is any indicator. Are notable New Yorkers embracing casual dining chains? Lizzie Grubman did take her client Tailor Made to, um, the Olive Garden…

Novelist Porochista Khakpour Drinks the Kool-Aid at a Hare Krishna Temple

“Café Sabarsky is obscenely soothing.”Photo: Melissa Hom

In Porochista Khakpour’s debut novel, Sons and Other Flammable Objects, a coming-of-age story that may make its Iranian-American author the next Zadie Smith (the Times Book Review, Radar, and Paper are planning profiles), Khakpour, who grew up in Los Angeles before moving to New York, describes the exasperation of stern father Darius Adam at discovering that his wayward son Xerxes keeps little more than Fruity Pebbles in his Manhattan apartment. “Xerxes offered potato chips,” the passage goes, “which his father looked at as if he had never seen a Pringles can before, awestruck at his son’s supposedly adult living conditions.” Given that the novel is loosely autobiographical, we wondered about the living (and dining) conditions of the young novelist.
