Summer Eats: Lobster, Popsicles, Beer, and Soba

Sit back and enjoy the summer. And the Summer Issue.Photo: Kang Kim

Summer's here, and depending on where you're coming from, that might mean cold noodles, spiked Popsicles, or just the simple pleasure of sitting outside drinking cold beer. Or maybe a combination of all three. In this week's issue, Rob and Robin introduce Jean-Georges Vongerichten's latest effort, Matsugen, a soba-noodle restaurant in the space that was 66. In the annual Summer Guide, we find the city's new-wave Popsicles; learn all about selecting, cooking, and eating lobsters; and wash it all down at a new beer garden in Williamsburg.

Drinking on an International Level: Beer Gardens in New York

Bohemian Hall

If the exchange rate is killing your plans for a European beer run this summer, visit a picnic table near you. We've surveyed some of the city's prominent beer gardens — from the Czech granddaddy in Astoria to a newcomer in Brooklyn — to see who hoists the most authentic stein. Primehouse's Steak Saves Its Star; BarFry Blasted

The best steaks at Primehouse NY are good enough to earn a single star from Frank Bruni — which is saying something, given that he had problems with service, didn't like the other entrées, and even found the rib eyes to be less than they ought to be. But the Creekstone strips carried the day, as they always do. [NYT]

The small, porky tapas at Jason Neroni's Cantina seem to impress Robert Sietsema, but his review leaves you with the sense that, croquettes aside, the place is still a work-in-progress. [VV]

Paul Adams dines at Smith's and praises the rich, possibly too rich, appetizers, while frowning over some of the mains. But on the whole he likes the place: “Some dishes are excessive by design, others poorly executed in the heat of the dinner rush, and a few, like the pasta, remarkably good and worthy of a return visit — perhaps after the first wave of crowds has moved on.” [NYS]

Radegast

You can go in now.Photo: Melissa Hom.

After stalking Radegast all day we’ve finally gotten someone on the phone to say, “Yes, we are open!” To rehash details from our first look at the place earlier this month: Bohemian Hall vet Ivan Aohut has his wife in the kitchen, mucho beer on tap, and eventually infrared heating in the outdoor garden.

Radegast May Soon Bring a Second Oktoberfest to Williamsburg

Beer Garden

By next year, that tree will begin producing beer.Melissa Hom

Difficulties securing a certificate of occupancy have delayed the opening of Radegast Hall for over a month, but owner Ivan Kohut and his partner, Andy Ivanov, tell us they’re hoping to pass a follow-up buildings inspection later today, in which case they could have Williamsburg’s first beer hall up and running sometime next week. As you can see from our gallery of interior shots, the place sure looks ready.
