Food Writers Share Their Dating Advice — But Why?

We always considered the connection between sex and food to be a suspect one, and we're even more convinced that the two don't mix after reading a somewhat disturbing feature on Nerve called “dating advice from food writers.” The tips range from the horrific (Julie and Julia author Julie Powell's “A good rare beef liver is like being banged hard against a wall in a skeezy alley behind a nightclub”) to the totally inane (Amateur Gourmet Adam Roberts's “Stick to lighter foods — salads, a simple piece of fish and a light dessert.”) Undoubtedly the silliest question, however, is asked of “Shameless Carnivore” Scott Gold: “Where can I pick up a food writer?” Ignore Gold's reply of the Greenmarket (!). Food writers can be found lounging around the same depressing singles' bars as every other kind of writer. They just look slightly plumper.

Dating Show Pairs Brooklyn Foodies for Lovin’ by the Oven

feed me show

Things are heating up between Cathy Erway and Jay Lombard.Photo courtesy of Feed Me

A new Internet dating show, Feed Me, pairs up Brooklyn foodies for blind dates in which they cook their go-to dishes for each other. In the first episode (the only one online so far), Lisa Lucas admires Scott Owen’s blowtorch as he prepares crème brûlée. Free-flowing wine doesn’t make the banter any less awkward, and, needless to say, R. Kelly–style “sex in the kitchen” does not ensue. It’s all very cute, but here’s hoping future episodes have more of a Hell Date angle — perhaps “Shameless Carnivore” Scott Gold, who’s slated to appear soon, can sear foie gras for a vegan as a little person with a pitchfork waits in the shadows.

The ‘New Carnivores’ Stalk Greater Fame

Scott Gold, poster boy for the New Carnivores.Photo: Scott Gold

The Post today looks into the world of the “New Carnivores,” those (mostly male) foodies whose calling card is their preening meatitude. Scott Gold, author of The Shameless Carnivore, shares an offal platter with the writer at Casa Mono. The New Carnivore revels in his love of offal and game animals, exerting a macho pride in the gross-out factor connected with such dishes. (It's better still if he can claim to have actually stalked his meat with bow and arrow, and then butchered it himself on the kitchen table.) We're still a little skeptical about the whole thing — isn't there enough beef, pork, and veal at the supermarket to make any carnivore happy? — but the Post did coin a good phrase.

Shameless Carnivore Stands to Be Corrected by Compassionate Carnivore

Scott Gold’s The Shameless Carnivore, which we wrote about last fall, no longer has the edible-animal-manifesto field to itself: Despite a long and positive review in T magazine last Sunday, competition is on its way in the form of The Compassionate Carnivore, a considerably less genial creed than Gold’s that's coming out on April 21. Where the latter is a lightly self-assured journey though the joys of eating everything on four legs, the latter, by the felicitously named Catherine Friend, looks to be far more ethically rigorous (and less fun): “Catherine Friend tackles the carnivore’s dilemma, exploring the contradictions, nuances, and questions surrounding the bewildering choices facing today’s more conscious meat-eaters,” says the book’s promotional copy. Now that sounds like fun! Of course, the whole pleasure of eating animals is in forgetting what they used to be on the way to becoming that glistening, bronzed pork chop or plump, unctuous sausage. But that view seems to be a minority one nowadays.

We are especially attached to edible animals, but we have to hand it to Greenpoint resident Scott Gold, the author of the forthcoming book The Shameless Carnivore. The 30-year-old former literary agent puts us to shame when it comes to the breadth of his appetites. Although his book is filled with dietetic information, ethics, meat lore, cultural anthropology, and the like, the thing that really turns us on is the part where he ate 31 animals in 31 days. “It wasn’t one a day,” Gold assures us. “Some nights it would be three or four. On venison night, I ate whitetail deer, antelope, elk, and caribou. But on the other hand, turtle soup took two days to prepare.”
