‘Top Chef’ Castoff Has No Love for Rick Bayless

Last night on Top Chef, San Franciscan Erik Hopfinger was ousted for his poorly rendered gourmet tacos and his sad, soggy corn dogs. But this setback doesn’t stop the 38-year-old from pursuing chef-fashion projects and singing the praises of his cheftestant-in-arms, Spike. New York’s Michael Alan Connelly talked to Erik this afternoon.

Worm Swallowers, This Is Your Ride

Taco Car

If you're going to ride...Photo: Daniel Maurer

Nota Bene: When someone says “Let’s get a taco,” this Datsun, parked outside of Pinche on Friday night, is what you want to roll in — assuming you don’t own a Cadillac DeVille.

For Ilan Hall, a Taco Shack of One’s Own

Ilan Hall

Ilan Hall finally has a platform for his talents.Photo: Getty Images

It’s a far cry from helming a Ken Friedman restaurant, as he was previously rumored to be doing, but now the word, via the Gluttoness, is that former Top Chef Ilan Hall is said to be opening a taco shack in Los Angeles. We suspect, as the Gluttoness does as well, that the hire is a way to buy cheap publicity for the taco shack in question. Still, is this what being a Top Chef has come to? Somewhere, Sam Talbot must be sniggering.

East Village: You can find high-quality prepackaged tofu by Kyoto’s "Johnny the Tofu-Maker, Blowin’ in the Wind" at Sunrise Mart, and the jiggly treat is so creamy you might want to forgo a sprinkling of soy sauce for a drizzle of honey. [Gothamist]
Hell’s Kitchen: Zanzibar has a new bar menu that’s served Monday through Saturday until 2 a.m. and includes Mediterranean meze and Asian appetizer platters. [Grub Street]
Meatpacking District: 4-Foodies hits up Sue Torres's communal Mexican spot Los Dados for its next tasting event on Monday, March 10. [4foodiesusa.com]

Taco Wars: Pinche Plays Dirty; Endless Summer Recruits Dirty Mofo

Pinche Menu

We were misquoted.Photo: Daniel Maurer

Remember when Pinche Taqueria owner Jeffrey Chartier told us his was the “first real authentic taqueria in New York City”? We're always wary of such hyperbole so imagine our surprise when we saw that the plaudit made its way onto Pinche’s takeout menu — attributed to us instead of the owner! Shame on you, Pinche: This is the worst case of fraud since Panchitos said its margaritas were named the best in the city by New York Magazine.

Taco Wars: Out With Matamoros, In With the Taco Truck

A reader writes in with sad news: “Looks like Matamoros Puebla Grocery on Bedford Ave — with its great taqueria in the back — has finally closed after having a For Sale sign in its window for 18 months or so. Walked by yesterday and they were gutting the place. I'd just eaten there a couple days before but they didn’t say anything about it closing, so maybe they're just renovating. But it didn’t look like it to me.” If Matamoros has indeed taken a fatal hit, this truly is a tragedy, but here’s some consoling news — Bad Wizard front man Curtis Brown says his taco truck will hit Bedford and North 7th in ten days max and he is “beyond stoked.” We must confess, so are we!

Taco Wars: Rockers Open New Front in Williamsburg

Tacos

Attention, hipsters: This taco's for you.Photo: iStockPhoto.com

Earlier we brought your attention to Pinche, the new taco joint that placed neighbor La Esquina on notice for its inauthentic tacos. Now comes a stunning development on the eastern front: in about two weeks a taco truck will be parking on (get ready for it) North 7th Street and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg. It will be manned by comedian (and front man of the Jewish) Jeffrey Jensen and Bad Wizard singer Curtis Brown, who conducted research at the trucks on Roosevelt Avenue.

Famous Pastafarian Turns His Attention to Tacos

Taco art

This photo is really cheesy.Photo: Bob Henderson

There’s a soft spot in our heart for artists who play with their food (remember Jason Wishnow’s Oedipus starring vegetables?), but what to make of the most recent work of Bob Henderson, founder of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster? In his spiel about why he borrowed a $1,200 lens to shoot 59-cent tacos in black-and-white, Henderson writes, “I have an interest in #133; niche marketing, memes, photography, and tacos. I invented pretentious fine art taco photography.” If you don’t want to spend $34 on a print, don’t worry — Henderson says he’s aiming to bring the project to New York. Expect a table of Gordita Supremes at the opening.
