New Taste of the UWS Reminds Us to Eat Uptown

Saturday’s New Taste of the Upper West Side was a coming-out party of sorts for the neighborhood, having regained its identity as a celebrated food district. Chef Michael Psilakis expressed gratitude for Kefi’s “cult status” in the neighborhood and its resulting full dining room. But the opening of Kefi 2.0 on Columbus Avenue has been delayed, Psilakis says. He hopes the new space will open in August, but don't expect any changes to the menu. “We’re not looking to change the concept,” says the chef. “We just want a place where we can take reservations, take credit cards, and not make people wait an hour for dinner.”

Telepan Settles Year-Old Labor Lawsuit

Just about a year to the date that a lawsuit accusing Telepan of illegally pooling tips was filed, the restaurant has settled with four employees for an undisclosed sum. Another complainant, Shawn Lee, refused to settle and will pursue his case. Bill Telepan tells us he had some explaining to do to diners: “Initially, some customers were pissed off, but they didn’t know what was going on. But once we reached out to them, they were satisfied with our explanation, and we moved on.”

New York Chefs Confront Rising Food Costs With Whip and Chair

Food costs go up and up, but prices — especially high ones — aren’t supposed to. Given that the rent in most New York restaurants isn’t going to come down anytime soon, this creates a problem for owners. The Wall Street Journal did an excellent feature on this subject on Saturday, showing how some restaurants were dealing with it — Blue Water Grill's selling beef trimmings as part of a chipotle roll, for example, or Ssäm Bar's dropping truffles. But we were curious about how some of the other chefs we know, particularly those with a well-heeled clientele, are making do. So we asked around, and here's what we heard.

Telepan, Too, Faces Labor Strife

Speaking of labor troubles, Bill Telepan seems to be the latest chef-owner to have them on his hands. NY1 reports that workers at Telepan, his Upper West Side Haute Barnyard restaurant, are incensed at management's taking big chunks of their tips. “They're actually stealing from what their employees are making,” a former waitress is quoted as saying. Telepan, reached by phone, denies the charges but says he’s not ready to go on the record yet with any details.
