The Naked Cowboy Treats Himself to Bedtime Protein Bars

This week a court ruled that Robert Burck, better known as the Naked Cowboy, could sue Mars, Inc., for using an unauthorized cartoon likeness of him in an M&M's ad. It’s no wonder Burck is going for $100 million: During his teenage years he wavered between anorexia (“I was starving myself,” he says, “I was the skinniest guy in the world”), and eating so poorly that his weight ballooned up to 277 pounds in high school. Fifteen years ago, he cut out sugar and started keeping a mind-bogglingly strict, M&M's-free diet at the recommendation of his trainer-mentor, John Parillo. That’s what it takes, apparently, if you’re going to stay in size 16 tightie whities and fetch $25,000 per appearance from underwear companies. We asked him if he didn’t eat junk food just once this week.

Edison Ballroom Opens in Former Supper Club Space

City Burger Not Feeling the Love From City Burger-Eaters

Despite great raw materials and a reservoir of goodwill, City Burger has opened to a chorus of catcalls from the burger-eating public, Midtown Lunch tells us today. We’re not surprised: Despite their use of La Frieda burger meat, the proprietors' backgrounds are in pizza. It’s no easy thing to build a great burger; just ask the legion of chains that have been buried over the years by public indifference. (Lesson one: If you have a juicy, delicious burger blend, try not cooking it until it turns into a hockey puck.) The final word, both literally and figuratively, is given by a Midtown Lunch commenter: “When I went, they could not even figure out how to cook a medium-rare burger for the ONLY customer in the restaurant. I dunno about you, but that’s just uncool.”

Astoria: The Sparrow and Fatty's serve two very different takes on burgers. If you like a traditional patty, choose the latter though, as the jalapeño turkey burger at Fatty's is relatively "glitzy." [Joey in Astoria]
East Village: A cool-looking spot called Black Iron Burger Shop is opening at 5th Street between Avenues A and B. Start looking forward to grilled burgers; "How can you name a place that and not grill them?" [A Hamburger Today]
Fort Greene: Brooklyn Flea–goers on Sunday may have noticed the waffles being reheated and sold by the Wafels & Dinges stand were from Augustin's Waffles in New Jersey. But don't worry! Food Blogs Already Having Sport With Calorie Listings

Expect a lot of shock-and-awe tactics on the part of the city’s food-writing corps, as calorie info begins to go up in chain restaurants around town. First on the beat is the Voice’s new blogger, Sarah DiGregorio, who stops in at T.G.I. Friday's to find that the ribs there are a horrific 1,900 calories. From there it’s on to Starbucks, where the blended-cream green tea has 650. The other chains DiGregorio stopped by still hadn’t gotten with the program: The Sbarro and McDonald’s locations she visited “hadn’t even heard of the law,” the Olive Garden presumably has its hands full dissuading waitresses from getting naked for Playboy, and as for Bubba Gump, a manager claimed that everybody is “very excited about it.” Something tells us that this excitement isn’t misplaced. There’s a lot of comedy coming our way.

Old Singapore Will Live Again, in Chinatown; Breakfast at Centro Starts Today

Chinatown: Continuing the nightlife blast on the Bowery, mixologist Albert Trummer will open an "old Singapore"–style bar called Apotheke this summer, on the Chinatown end at 9 Doyers Street. [NYT]
Times Square: China Club will close this Friday and reopen on Saturday as the club Opera, with a fancy "new look for the dance floor." Because sanding the floor brings in the revelers. [Zagat]
Tribeca: Mai House is serving a $59 tasting menu by cook Spike Mendelsohn "based on the food he cooked on Top Chef." [NYS]

Clubland’s Toughest Door Is in, Um, Times Square?

Clubs have long vied for celeb-studded Tuesday nights, so what’s the hottest one going these days? By one account, it’s Spotlight Live??? We were tempted to dismiss the Times Square karaoke complex as “strictly for the tourists” when it first opened, but that changed when we heard hip-hop stars were in the house during the recent Monday morning when a knife fight broke out. According to MTV.com, Beyoncé, Mya, Fantasia, Ne-Yo, and others have taken the stage for Tuesday’s “R&B Live” night. This week, when Diddy hosted a Bad Boy showcase, Fat Joe, Ray J, and Missy Elliott were in the audience, and Naughty by Nature and Danity Kane performed. We called the club looking to get in on the action, but were told it was a private event put on by an entertainment group affiliated with Universal Records. In other words, that door is tight.

Is Chop Suey the Worst Name Ever for a Korean Restaurant?

Zak Pelaccio has been getting an earful from some Asian-Americans over Chop Suey, the name of his latest project as Consulting Chef of the Future. At least among the ones who commented on Grub Street, the prevailing feeling seemed to be that, political aspects aside, the name was just dumb: “Chop Suey is such a HORRIBLE NAME! Not only is it NOT Korean generally, the name “chop suey” or ‘za sui,’ when used in Chinese, has the meaning of cooked animal offal or entrails.” “Zak needs help picking names of his restaurants … Chicken Bone? FATTY Crab, Chop Suey?” “My GOD. chop suey is the stupidest name for any kind of restaurant Pelaccio has come up with to date.”

Zak Pelaccio’s Chop Suey to Open Next Month

Zak Pelaccio has somehow found time to plan a new restaurant, in between taking over Borough Food and Drink from Jeffrey Chodorow, opening a new Fatty Crab uptown, and perfecting a haute Malaysian restaurant in London. Look for a big new Korean-themed restaurant in the Renaissance called Chop Suey to open (says Pelaccio with optimism) in late January. Last summer, the bearded wonder took a trip to Korea, where he fell in love with the marinated beef belly and other meaty delights he plans to implement in his new menu as consulting chef. At this pace, we predict Ditmas Park and Inwood will be only Pelaccio-free neighborhoods in New York. But if they're lucky, they'll get restaurants too.

It doesn’t take much to become immortalized in Madame Tussauds these days: The wax museum, where Napoleon Bonaparte twice sat for his likeness, now has the copies of RuPaul, Freddie Krueger, and George Pataki occupying its not-so-hallowed halls. Still, we were taken aback when we heard that the Burger King and his progeny, the Whopper, were about to be enshrined. (Burger King, which came up with the idea, also paid for it.)

Nelson Hernandez was a teacher for ten years before he decided he’d rather make art than teach it. He now performs around town as a singer-songwriter and pays the rent by waiting tables at Marco Canora’s joint Insieme. Since Insieme is located directly across from the darkened Winter Garden, we thought Hernandez might be just the person to tell us what the scene has been lately at a restaurant that caters both to theatergoing tourists and to homegrown aficionados of contemporary Italian cuisine.

Falafel Innovations Power Chickpea’s Expansion Plans

Chickpea’s decision to give up frying their falafel filled us with sadness. Even if, as Eater suggested in their item on the subject, it was as a prelude to expansion, was this really the direction we wanted to see falafel go? The only good thing about these “nosh puppies,” for our money, was their oil-fried goodness. But Chickpea is expanding, executive chef Alex Schindler tells us, with locations planned for the Upper West Side, the meatpacking district, and Times Square, in the next year alone, and with the expansion must come plans to diversify and modernize the Chickpea trinity of falafel, hummus, and shawarma.
