McNally Restoring, Not Modernizing, Minetta; Weekend Happy Hours

Carroll Gardens: The Clover Club's encyclopedic drink menu is pretty interesting for those "uninitiated to the nuances of high-class cocktails." [Bottomless Dish/Citysearch]

Lower East Side: Bondi Road offers some funny-sounding but equally awesome deals throughout the week, like Shark-Attack Sundays, with $10 shark steaks and $10 pitchers of "beach juice"; an all-you-can-drink $15 brunch with unlimited Foster's, greyhounds, and screwdrivers; and Barramondays, when barramundi fillets are $10 and cocktails are $5. [Grub Street]

Murray Hill: Pamplona has an all-night happy hour on Saturdays, with glasses of sangria or wine for $5 and mojitos for $6, from 5 p.m. until close. [Grub Street]
West Village: Since Keith McNally says he's not going to change the look of Minetta Tavern, he offers this response as to why construction is taking so long: “There are…parts of the tavern that have been ‘modernized’ over the past 25 years in a manner which I found sufficiently disturbing to make me decide to replace them with something much closer to their original state.” [Villager]
Upper East Side: Frank Bruni and his cohorts are not fans of Allorro's fried pasta, which a "pessimist would call rock-hard and an optimist would call super-crunchy," or any of the food, really. His first impressions are in stark contrast to Steve Cuozzo's recent rave. [Diner's Journal/NYT]

Jewish-Cooking Contest Set to Encourage Rare Feats

92nd st Y megabites

Leave the bacon and scallops at the door.Photo courtesy 92nd Street Y

Jewish cooking tends not to lend itself to originality: the same kugels, briskets, and matzo balls have appeared on tables in the greater–New York area since time immemorial. But the 92nd Street Y is sponsoring a Jewish-recipe contest, to be judged by a blue-ribbon panel of New York food savants: our own Gael Greene, “food maven” Arthur Schwartz, "Food Talk"’s Mike Colameco, multiple James Beard–winning cookbook author Rozanne Gold, and Marc Murphy of Landmarc. So if you have a twist on the old traditions, bring it! The recipes don’t have to be kosher, strictly speaking, but they should be “kosher-style”: no meat and dairy in the same dish, no pork or shellfish. And dishes must take less than an hour to make. The winner will be fêted in various ways by the 92nd Street Y: The recipe will appear in a cookbook, will be served at the 92YTribeca Café for a month, and its author gets a free plane ride and two nights in a hotel. The entry form and rules can be found here.

East Village: The Chocolate Bar has moved across town to 127 East 7th Street, near First Avenue. [Strong Buzz]
Murray Hill: Bar Milano might not be getting raves yet for its food, but Frank Bruni considers a specialty cocktail of "rosemary-infused Hendrick’s gin, freshly squeezed lemon juice, a touch of reduced Balsamic vinegar, fresh basil and strawberries...a lively dance of flavors, and it’s not excessively sweet." It also didn't taste excessively alcoholic when we tried it. [Diner's Journal/NYT]

A First Look at Alloro, the Upper East Side’s New Italian

alloro

It ain't easy being green.Photos: Melissa Hom

As you can see from these first interior shots, Alloro, an Italian spot opening on the Upper East Side tomorrow, definitely has its own thing going on. The floor is greener than one of Hillary Clinton's pantsuits. The man behind this operation is Salvatore Corea, formerly a partner and executive chef at Spiga and a current operator of Cacio e Pepe and Bocca. This is his first venture with wife Gina, whom he met while cooking pizza at renowned Italian spot La Berninetta. No pies on the dinner menu here — as you can see, there are meat and cheese plates, pastas such as fettuccine tossed in white veal ragù, and entrées such as lavender-crusted swordfish steak over a bed of spinach, as well as a loin of lamb in a fresh mint reduction with eggplant purée and Pecorino-cheese foam. If “foam” turns you off, you can always stay on the safe side — fried spaghetti!

Financial District: Zaitzeff really does make a great burger: "Everything points to a dry, disappointing burger here — grass-fed sirloin, nonstandard bun, cooked on a griddle under a weight — but the meat is surprisingly, amazingly juicy and hella flavorful." [Hamburger Today]

Astoria: Mundo Cafe will bring back its summer menu next week. Which means the return of Hungarian cherry soup, which only looks like Pepto-Bismol. [Joey in Astoria]

Upper East Side: Frank Bruni finds the most interesting outcome of the Beard Awards to be Café Boulud's Gavin Kaysen as Rising Star Chef since "this says a lot about the impression Kaysen has made, or rather how quickly he’s made it. Former Elaine’s Bartender Brian McDonald Tells All

brian mcdonald

"Elaine had a very mature crowd."Photo: Melissa Hom

In Last Call at Elaine’s, Brian McDonald recalls his time as a recovering alcoholic, tending bar at the glamorous Upper East Side saloon-cum-salon from 1986 to 1997. McDonald left Elaine’s in the most heroic of ways, after a publication party there for his first book. However, it’s clear from his memoir that Elaine Kaufman, the firebrand who still runs her eponymous restaurant after celebrating its 45th anniversary this month, had a great deal of influence on his second career. We asked him about his time with her and what she thought of his tell-all.

The city’s strip clubs are being picked off one by one by the SLA, but if broker Nigel Shamash has his way, a new one will be coming to the Upper East Side (of all places!). The ad claims the space has one of just nine “unlimited entertainment licenses” in the city, meaning it can be used as a gentleman’s club.

First Look: Inside Park Avenue Spring

Park Avenue Spring

The reborn dining room at Park Avenue Spring.Photos: Melissa Hom

After their usual 48 hours of toil, design firm AvroKo has turned Park Avenue Winter into Park Avenue Spring. Designer William Harris tells us the firm found inspiration in both New Zealand’s open landscapes and in English gardens (hence concrete casts of 18th century garden statues). Harris and friends used strong greens for the upholstery and chair backs, green- and gold-washed paper for the wall panels, and plenty of what he calls “brass moments that nature could live in.” The central installment consists of flowers captured inside of brass rods, and the wall panels feature brass molding. But see for yourself.

Bronx: Peter Meehan found someone to drive him to Trattoria Zero Otto Nove on Arthur Avenue to try the margherita that’s been getting blog buzz as "the best Neapolitan pizza in New York City.” It’s good, he says, but needs work (and less sweet sauce).
