Jalapeños to Blame for Salmonella?; ‘Rachael Ray Show’ No Place for Anorexics

• Government officials investigating the salmonella outbreak are now eying three kinds of hot peppers, including jalapeños, as the leading suspect for spreading the bacteria. [WSJ]

• With several restaurants out of business and others for sale, even dining destinations in the chichi Hamptons are suffering from the current economic downturn. [Real Deal]

• Three waiters at the Old Homestead Steakhouse say that ever since they sued the restaurant and won the case, they’ve been given the most undesirable tables in the house. Naturally, they’re filing another lawsuit. [NYP]

Vongerichten Veteran to Open Restaurant in Fort Greene

Brooklyn Flea just opened, and, in a few months, bargain hunters can eat at a new restaurant at 7 Greene Avenue, just off of Fulton Street. Former Perry Street sous-chef Tyler Kord describes his concept as “New American, with a little Hungarian, some Korean, and a bit of Wisconsin thrown in.” His time in Vongerichten’s kitchen is also an influence, he says. “I learned about a lot of the intense behind-the-scenes preparation to make a simple-looking dish.” That explains why he refers to his cooking style as “casual badass.” Don't try to make a reservation just yet — the restaurant is full of plywood and in need of a liquor license. But the principals are in place, including former Perry Street pastry chef Amanda Clark, Weather Up designer Matthew Maddy, and Lil' Frankie’s GM Matt Suchomski.

Pizza, Pretzels, and Bourbon — Sounds Dreamy

artichoke pizza

The true successor to DeMarco's?Photo: Zach Desart

Rob and Robin dominate the food section in the magazine this week, first with their Underground Gourmet review of Artichoke, an East Village pizzeria fit to be compared to the late, lamented DeMarco's. Missing the pretzels of your youth? Rob and Robin researched the city’s bread baskets and bar menus and compiled a guide to the salty treats. This week’s "Openings" include the Jason Denton’s highly anticipated Bar Milano, and the "In Season" recipe taps maple syrup’s role in Don Lee’s delicious bacon-infused bourbon at PDT. Gael Greene eats at Madaleine Mae this week, but if you want to eat in, Rob and Robin have compiled a high-end grocery list for you. And if all this makes you need a drink, Emma Rosenblum visited Weather Up on a recent Saturday night to survey the crowd.

Weather Up Brings Petraske's Presbyterians to Prospect Heights

Weather Up

Inside Weather Up.Photo: Melissa Hom

After a few weeks of preopening buzz, Weather Up has opened and owner Kathryn Weatherup (as you’ll recall, an original partner in East Side Company) tells us that by the end of the week there will be eleven classic cocktails on the menu (including an old-fashioned, a Brooklyn, a Florida daiquiri, a Presbyterian, a honeysuckle, a Sazerac, an aviator, and a bee's knees) plus a weekly pick from bartenders Eliza Rose (formerly of Veritas) and James Arnold, who were trained by Milk and Honey’s Sasha Petraske. Hours of operation: Tuesday through Sunday, 7 p.m. till 3 a.m. Will this reliquary get mobbed as quickly as the Hotel Delmano did? For anyone planning to go there, we hope not.

Weather Up, 589 Vanderbilt Ave., nr. Dean St., Prospect Heights, Brooklyn; no phone yet.

Prospect Heights Cocktail Den Promises Back Garden, Oysters

Weather Up, the new cocktail bar in Prospect Heights, should open in a couple of weeks, says owner Kathryn Weatherup, an original investor in East Side Company Bar. Weather Up's partner Matthew Maddy, who cut his teeth with a design firm that worked on the Box and Stanton Social, is turning a former storefront church (Google street view, above) into a “jewel box” of sorts by installing an old mahogany bar with a custom-made brass bar top, a tiled vaulted ceiling, stainless-steel and onyx light fixtures, and banquettes of buffalo-skin leather. Add to all that a back garden and you have a drinks temple fit for barkeeps trained by Sasha Petraske. There will be oysters and cheese plates, but obviously the thing that’ll drive people here are the classic cocktails, with the menu changing every couple of months. Soundtrack: jazz, blues, and local cocktailians smacking their lips.
