Food-Cart Turf Wars; Wii at Wildwood

Astoria: Restaurant Week is happening in Queens too, you know. Among others, the superexpensive Water's Edge is participating. [Joey in Astoria]
Gramercy: A weekly Wii boxing tournament will begin next month at Wildwood Barbeque. The gig will play to their young-male demographic. That's for sure. [Strong Buzz]
Park Slope: Despite rumors of a DOH shutdown, the Dominican greasy spoon El Gran Castillo is in business. [Grub Street]
Union Square: The "turf wars" continue in this overly populated food-truck area. Luckily, a food fight is yet to break out. [Eater]
West Village: Yategan Kebab gets the occasional celeb stop in, including Bill Cosby and Colin Farrell. At least, according to the pics they've posted on the wall. [GoaG]
Williamsburg: It's a good thing new pizza joints are on the horizon, because the Brick Oven Gallery is closed. [FREE Williamsburg]

Bar Q Steals Two Stars; a Split Decision on Benoit

Despite mostly hating the barbecue parts of the Bar Q menu, Frank Bruni found enough to like at Anita Lo's new restaurant to justify giving it two stars, thanks to dishes “eclipsing my frustrations and lifting Bar Q well above its unevenness.” [NYT]

Ryan Sutton lays a merciless beat-down on Scarpetta, even going as far as to call chef Scott Conant's famous spaghetti overcooked! In fact, Sutton did like a few things — a fish here, a pea soup there — but he's not buying into Scarpetta, and puts down his flag with the first vehemently negative review. [Bloomberg]

Steve Cuozzo drops the hammer on Benoit, and from what we're hearing, he won't be the last. “Boring,” “irredeemably dull,” “unseasoned enough for convalescents…” Welcome back to the critical shit list, Mr. Alain Ducasse! Your brief honeymoon with Adour is now officially over. [NYP]

Secrets of Grand Sichuan, and Welcome to Scarpetta

Wildwood Barbeque

Olana comes in under Adam Platt's microscope.Photo: Zach Desart

In the magazine this week, Adam Platt bestows two approving stars on Olana and Mia Dona, while Gael Greene is mostly pleased with Wildwood Barbeque. The Robs provide insight on the world of Chinese food with the founder of the Grand Sichuan chain, and Amanda Freitag of the Harrison gives the Robs her recipe for lovage with gravlax. In "Openings," our food editors announce the arrival of three restaurants with backstories: Hundred Acres, the successor to the recently closed Provence; Scarpetta, Scott Conant’s new casual Italian in the meatpacking; and Curry-Ya, the latest Japanese import to the East Village. Plus, hotelier André Balazs launches his own wine. It's just another busy week in New York.

BBQ Season Returns to New York

Watch out New York: it's BBQ season again..Photo courtesy Grillin' on the Bay

Robert Fernandez's White Trash BBQ blog has been largely dormant this winter, but increased activity shows that the smoky season is here. He wrote an in-depth review of Wildwood Barbeque, the first such to show up on the Web. It's a rave: “I don't think I've ever had a better rib in a restaurant … The ribs were so good, that I was using Wildwood's ribs to teach my daughter how competition barbecue is judged. A RESTAURANT RIB.”

First Look Inside Wildwood Barbeque

Wildwood, revealed.Photo: Melissa Hom

Wildwood Barbeque is still in friends-and-family mode, but we have the first pictures of the interior, which used to be Barça 18. The space seems right for the raucous atmosphere, massive portions, and noise-absorbing music that combine to define the Wildwood experience (it was rocking last night). A number of details still remain to be tweaked, but as with any B.R. Guest restaurant, things will get nailed down when they're supposed to, and the doors will open Thursday.
