Writer-Actor Lin-Manuel Miranda Tells Where to Go In the Heights

lin-manuel miranda

Looking uptown.Photo: Joan Marcus

The writer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda didn't actually grow up in Washington Heights, the milieu of his highly nostalgic Broadway smash, In the Heights. "I missed the cutoff by about ten blocks," the outed Inwood native revealed to us. But that means—as evidenced by his favorite neighborhood hangs, below—he's just got even more of upper Manhattan figured out.

"I eat mangu every time I'm uptown." »

Designer Scott Morrison Still Parties in Woodstock

scott morrison

"Naka Naka is my favorite Japanese place. All my Japanese friends, it's their favorite restaurant downtown."Photo: Melissa Hom

Before Taavo Somer was a restaurateur he designed a T-shirt line, as we learned in this week’s magazine. His partner in that endeavor (and someone who might just be able to skip the line at Freemans) was Scott Morrison, also the founder and designer of Earnest Sewn, best known, of course, for its jeans. Morrison himself wears a slim-cut size 33, but he doesn’t skimp on meals to fit into them. In fact he considers McDonald’s to be the best restaurant of all time and is such a beer lover that his home bar in Woodstock, designed by Somer, was featured in Food & Wine. We asked him where he went this week for food and beer.

Model Taylor Fuchs Has to Fight His Love of the Slice

taylor fuchs

"Me and my friends like to go to Pipa for brunch and get the pancakes."Photo: Melissa Hom

Taylor Fuchs was more of a sports guy when an agent convinced him to leave college after two years to try his hand at modeling. Since his debut just about a year ago, the 21 year old has walked for a slew of designers — from Marc Jacobs to Dolce & Gabbana — and appeared in magazines such as V and GQ Style, as well as titillated bloggers. He makes his home in Greenpoint, where he finds pierogi akin to the ones his grandmother still makes for him when he returns to Saskatchewan, Canada (Fuchs is 3/4th German and 1/4th English). So where does he go for Brooklyn sushi?

"I don't necessarily agree with models being as skinny as they are." »

Eric and Donald Trump Jr. Dine Everywhere From McDonald's to Dubai

Donald Trump, Jr. and Eric Trump

Eric and Donald: "We have a great restaurant downstairs called Trump Grill."Photo: Melissa Hom

As partners in their father’s business, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. do a lot of dining together — whether they’re talking to clients Stateside about Quattro, their upcoming restaurant in the Trump Soho building or cutting ribbons in the Middle East as they did this week. Don — or Donnie, as his younger brother calls him — prefers to eat downtown at places like BondSt and Woo Lae Oak, but that doesn’t mean he’s above stopping into McDonald’s for a sausage, egg, and cheese. “We’ve been brought up to have both kinds of taste: My father’s an all-American eater — burgers, fries, pizza — and my mother is more of a sophisticated, European eater.” Aside from a dinner at Raoul’s, Trump Jr. didn’t see much of New York this week owing to a trip to Greece, so we asked Eric to tell us what he ate.

"We're a steak-and-potato family." »

Natasha Bedingfield Meets Spencer and Heidi at Kobe Club

"The Spotted Pig has incredible food."Photo: Melissa Hom

On the week of the release of her new video “Pocketful of Sunshine” (also the title of her new album) and the announcement of U.S. tour dates today (she plays Irving Plaza on June 25), London songstress Natasha Bedingfield flew into town and headed straight to (where else?) Rose Bar. Chances are she didn’t bat an eye at the $20 drinks. Her hometown is the most expensive city to eat in, but she says she doesn’t notice any price difference compared to New York. “I tend to spend a lot on food anyway,” she tells us. “I stay in hotels, where the food is always expensive. I never really look at the price of something before I buy it unless it’s wine. You can waste a lot on wine.” We asked her where and how she spent so freely.

"A taste of heaven." »

Robin Quivers of ‘The Howard Stern Show’ Is Vegan at Per Se

Howard Stern’s perennial sidekick Robin Quivers used to pig out on Roy Rogers with him after the show, but in the past six months she has switched to a vegan diet. “I was having trouble with discomfort, lack of energy…when I discovered fasting all these things went away.” Her co-workers mock her, despite the fact that she’s lost sixty pounds in six months, but no matter. “I sometimes say to them, ‘You’re the guys who can’t make it through the show. By 9:30 a.m., you’re falling asleep. I seem to be fine.” We asked her to sell us on a life without meat and cheese.

"I can't imagine surviving on that." »

Danny Meyer Has One Last Feast at Florent

Amanda Hesser

Mr. Hospitality at Molly's Pub.Photo: Meghan Petersen

Danny Meyer says his weight hasn’t shifted more than three pounds since high school, but his empire, at least, is growing: He recently secured a catering deal with the Puck Building, he’s vying to serve food at Citi Field (“it’d be a nice thing to have a pulled-pork sandwich while watching a game,” he tells us), and he’s aiming to open an Upper West Side outpost of the Shake Shack by the end of the summer. Meyer has monthly meetings with his chefs, but he rarely has a sit-down meal at one of his own restaurants (he eats at Union Square Cafe a couple of times a year and prefers Blue Smoke because it’s dark and he can go incognito), so we asked him where he does eat and whether he has to wait in line for Shack Burgers.

"When I go to a restaurant, I taste every single thing." »

Carmine Agnello Is a Grown-up Gotti at Rao's

and that's it."Photo: Melissa Hom

It was a big week for Carmine Agnello Jr., grandson of John Gotti — he has just finished cutting his debut hip-hop album, his 22nd birthday is coming up (“you go from being a boy to a man and that’s it,” he says), and his father, who just served almost ten years, made a rare dinner appearance, an event that was filmed for an upcoming reality show that will bring fans up to date on goings-on since Growing Up Gotti. We’ve heard that Agnello, who lives in Old Westbury, Long Island, can’t move around the city as freely as the average diner, given his family history, but that doesn’t mean he can’t score a table as Rao’s.

Dominic Chianese Can’t Avoid the Bread

dominic chianese

"York Grill has become a favorite."Photo: Melissa Hom

Dominic Chianese, who played Tony’s Uncle Junior on the Sopranos and sings Italian standards tonight at Columbus 72, was born and raised in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx. His grandfather owned an Italian-French restaurant on Houston Street, and his mother, who worked there, is related to the owner of Mario’s, where Chianese says you can find the best pizza on Arthur Avenue. One of his cousins works at Borgatti’s and makes what Chianese considers the best ravioli in the country. Of course, being a Soprano means getting the VIP treatment even if a relative doesn’t own the restaurant. “As an Italian-American,” he says, “I enjoy it. My wife says [in a proper English accent] ‘You can’t do that, Dominic.’ It’s a cultural thing: She’s from England. I’m from the Bronx.” We asked him where he got treated like a king this week.

"I can tell by the look and by the aroma when it's great stuff." »

Comedian Todd Barry Eschews Tomatoes, Eggs, and Mayo, But Not 33-Cent Cookies

todd barry

"Second midday snack: some 33-cent Drake’s oatmeal cookies."Melissa Hom

On Late Night With Conan O’Brien recently, Conan called comedian Todd Barry “the quintessential New Yorker.” That doesn't mean he's at Balthazar every morning. “Every time I talk about Chipotle in conversation," he told Conan's audience, "Someone goes, ‘Oh, Chipotle is delicious. Can you believe they were started by McDonald’s?’ ‘Uh, McDonald’s is delicious, so yes, I can believe that. It’s not like Ben and Jerry’s opened up a lingerie shop. It’s the world’s greatest restaurant chain taking a stab at another kind of food and hitting it out of the park.’” Other than that, Barry eats at Café Orlin about five times a week. Since it was closed for renovations this week, he had to practice his tomato, mayo, and orange-juice pulp aversions elsewhere.
