Painful Small Talk at the ‘Time’ 100?

  • 5/8/07 at 6:01 PM

Time 100 gala. Frederick P. Rose Hall, 33 W. 60th St., nr. Broadway, 7 p.m. Expected guests include Elie Wiesel, Henry Kissinger, LeBron James, Ann Coulter, Kanye West, Martha Stewart, and many others. It seems that if luxury vacation spots like St. Barts didn’t exist, they’d have to be created simply for the purpose of giving people like LeBron James and Henry Kissinger things to talk about at gatherings of the rich, famous, and otherwise utterly dissimilar.

American Patrons of the Tate artists’ dinner. Riverfront Pavilion, W. 39th St., nr. Twelfth Ave., 7:30 p.m. Expected guests include Chuck Close, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Brice Marden, Cindy Sherman, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Cy Twombly, Yoko Ono and a cornucopia of bigwigs from fashion and industry. That’s a huge critical mass of modern-art energy poised on the Hudson — it seems possible that the residents of Weehawken, across the river, may be compelled, in a Close Encounters sort of way, to draw rainbow-colored squiggly lines or craft giant puppies out of plants.
