Punk Is Dead, Long Live Punk

CBGB

The Decline of Eastern Civilization Photo: racked.com

It's been empty for over a year, but this week, demolition began at 313-315 Bowery, the former home of CBGB. Racked has pictures that make you feel nostalgic for the good old days of punk rock, even though when it opened, we had not actually been born. So, at last, punk is really, actually dead. But! Whatever ends up going here — a Starbucks, a bar serving artisanal cocktails, a boutique selling $500 shirts — everyone is probably going to reflexively hate it for a good little while, and isn't that sort of, well, punk?
