Sandra Sobieraj was the Washington bureau chief for People during the 2002 election. Frank Westfall was a Secret Service bomb technician charged with protecting Vice-President Dick Cheney. When another agent introduced them, they fell in love and decided to get married. It was like something out of a movie! And it's all due to Dick Cheney, they thought. Not long after the wedding, the couple attended Cheney's annual Christmas party. Spying the vice-president, Sandra decided she would approach the Dark Lord and thank him for his indirect role in the proceedings. After all, it was one of his agents who set them up, and no matter how evil he seemed, the vice-president was human, and his heart would surely be warmed to hear about the joyous union that resulted. After all, it was Christmas.

Eh, not so much.

In the receiving line Ms. Sobieraj told Mr. Cheney that she gives him credit for the marriage, since it was one of his agents who fixed them up. "Well, that's not what they're supposed to be doing," Mr. Cheney said, according to Ms. Sobieraj.

Um. Awkward.
