New Yorkers Rule the ‘Time’ 100!

5/1/08 at 11:35 AM

Time 100 2008

The annual Time 100 list is out, and, as usual, New Yorkers totally dominate. Here are some of our hometown heroes included:
Hillary Clinton, BE Vice Chairman Bob and his wife Suzanne Wright, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Nicholas Schiff, Mariah Carey, Metropolitan Opera director Peter Gelb, Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, JPMorgan Chase president Jamie Dimon, and Rupert Murdoch [Hey, he belongs to us! Screw you, London and Australia — anybody that nefarious has to be a New Yorker.]

Wait, where's Sarah Jessica Parker? We thought she was the most important person in the whole world. Man, pop culture has really been misleading us lately.

Anyway, people often wonder how Time comes up with this list every year (it's of the world's most "influential" people, a hard metric to calculate). Turns out, nobody knows. Nor do they know how these people are ranked in order (being the number-one most influential is certainly a lot cooler than being the 56th, no?). So the magazine's Joel Stein created his own formula. It goes like this:

Rank = (Newness/2 + Google Mentions + Financial Times Mentions + TMZ.com Mentions) * Political Power

How did we know who was important before the Internet?
