Serena Williams won the women's U.S. Open last night, assuming the No. 1 ranking for the first time since 2003. Her opponent, Jelena Jankovic, responded like the surly 23-year-old she is: "I gave her a lot of gifts [...] I lost my No. 1 ranking. It's not fair." And when Williams received her $1.5 million winner's check, Jankovic asked, "How much did I get?" The answer was $750,000 — which seemed to lessen her pout a bit: "Tomorrow is my day to go shopping." Yeah, that's what we normally do after these sorts of crushing defeats and public tantrums. [NYT]
