Ten Absolutely Classic Sportscaster Gaffes

  • 10/29/08 at 5:30 PM

Sunday, while interviewing new San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary, Fox Sports broadcaster Danyelle Sargent asked the man about calling his “mentor” Bill Walsh after being named to the post. There were two problems with this. First, Singletary never worked for Walsh, and therefore would not be calling him his “mentor.” Second, and more to the point, Walsh died in July 2007. Back in the olden days, sports broadcasters could unleash massive gaffes like this and few would ever hear about it. But today, they’re all over the Web within minutes. This one has since been pulled from YouTube (like this Rick Sutcliffe classic), but it's actually Sargent’s second infamous on-air goof-up. Because we live in dreary apocalyptic times and could surely use a pick-me-up, here’s a video slideshow of this writer's ten favorite sportscaster meltdowns of all time, including Sargent’s first.
