McClatchy Takes Another Hit

Jay Leno's hospitalization and the subsequent cancellation of today's Tonight Show isn't the only bad news in media today.

• To cut costs, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security told its employees to cancel subscriptions to some newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Time. According to the AP, "The department says employees will still have access to news because most publications can be found online." Doesn't that say it all? [AP via FishbowlNY/Mediabistro]

• The McClatchy Company, which publishes the Miami Herald, among other titles, reported a $37 million, or 45 cents per share, loss in the first quarter. [Yahoo]

Scientific American editor-in-chief John Rennie is out, along with six other magazine employees, amid a restructuring of the title's operations. [Mixed Media/Portfolio]

• The New York Times Company is sticking to its May 1 deadline for that $20 million in concessions it's looking to collect from unions at the Boston Globe. Without the concessions, the Globe may be shuttered. [Boston Globe]
