President Obama convened his Cabinet for the first time today to ask his department heads for a combined $100 million in cost-cutting savings. That sounds like a lot of money, until you compare it to the $1.2 trillion deficit that Obama's budget forecasts, and then it seems more like taking a piss in the ocean. Still, having an extra $100 million to work with never hurts, and various agencies have already sprung into action. Like Homeland Security, which estimates it can save over $50 million by buying office supplies in bulk — meaning, basically, that the people responsible for protecting the country from terrorism just figured out why everyone has been shopping at Costco all these years.
