Mario Cantone is still a fan of Governor Paterson. “You know, a lot of people don’t like him, but I think he’s a little tough bitch,” Cantone told us last night at the DKMS gala. “I think he’s tough. I think he’s like, ‘I don’t care if you don’t like me, I’m going to do what I want.’” However, Cantone admits he is not especially hopeful about Paterson’s chances of passing same-sex marriage legislation in New York State. “I’d like it to happen,” he says, and if it doesn’t, it’ll make us look like California. “I hope we show them up, because California is twenty years behind the times,” he snorted. “No, make that 40.”

Should the state legislate same-sex marriage, Cantone says he and his longtime partner Jerry Dixon would tie the knot, quietly, with just a witness. “But I would register, because you know what, the straight people get all the gifts. I’ve been living with him for seventeen years; what did I get? I got a teacup, that’s about it.” Cantone is not looking for a mere toaster, though. “I’m registering at Tiffany’s. I want the good stuff.”
